BURGHOUND 92 POINTS: "There is an abundance of Chablis character here with notes of iodine, algae, citrus and much more discreet nuances of mineral reduction along with hints of dried yellow orchard fruit. The silky yet entirely serious medium-bodied flavors exhibit plenty of minerality on the citrusy and hugely long finish that is clean, dry, long and balanced. This highly impressive effort should reward up to a decade of cellar time though drink well before that if desired."

The de Villaines farm three appellations within the Côte Chalonaise, namely Bouzeron (Aligoté), Rully (Chardonnay) and Mercurey (Pinot Noir). Their single-vineyard parcels are stunning examples of what this complex and amazing terroir can yield. Though their wines are quite enjoyable young, their ability to age well is what one might expect from a master such as de Villaine. Much of this is due to both the diversity of his vinestock and his organic and biodynamic methodology in the vineyards, both of which Aubert stands by with great conviction. He also ferments his Mercureys in wood cuves, a style adopted from DRC.

The richest white Burgundy in the de Villaine stable, this Rully is an exercise in balance. Hazelnut and quince paste greet the nose, followed by a dense mouthful of ripe, succulent yellow fruits. Despite its voluptuousness, the wine is dry, fresh, very stony, and even salty—mouthwateringly delicious. This vintage is magnificent for Les Saint-Jacques, and ample proof of the high quality of terroir in this southern stronghold of Burgundy. The fact that it isn’t premier cru, well, that’s proof of a talented grower, because it sure does taste like it. —Dixon Brooke

Winemaker's Notes - "Our Bouzeron comes from vines situated on the best slopes of the appellations. We have planted the golden Aligoté doré grape, which gives lowers yield and more aromatic wines than its cousin, the Aligoté vert. True to its varietal nature, our Bouzeron is a liveley, fruity wine, but it also has a finesse and roundness that spring from the essential nature of the terroir. These qualities lend it great versatility. To best appreciate the freshness and fruit, it would be drunk young, within two or three years. To allow the wine to fully develop fullness and "fatness", age it for up to ten years. It should be served chilled, at about 54°F, as an apéritif, with seafood, or with a number of cheeses (goat cheese, Cantal, Beaufort, Parmesan, Roquefort, etc."

Benoit is the younger brother of Burgundy legend Arnaud Ente. Benoit began his career by growing fruit on half of his grandparent's domaine. After getting plenty of practice producing superior grapes for negociants, he parted ways with the relatives in 1997 to farm 9.55 acres of his own vineyards. His primary production is Chardonnay from the ACs of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, but he also makes Bourgogne Blanc, Cremant, and Aligote. Benoit's hallmarks are purity, terroir, and low intervention, long elevage, and very little new oak. Benoit lets his fruit and soil do the winemaking.

BURGHOUND 91-94 POINTS "SWEET SPOT": "(from a 1 ha parcel). Here the nose is very firmly reduced and presently unreadable. Otherwise there is outstanding richness to the voluminous and caressing medium weight flavors that are really quite supple though the sleek and ultra-fine finish tightens up considerably on the impeccably well-balanced and gorgeously complex finale. As the best examples always are, this is a lilting Puligny of finesse and minerality."

Top 2014 white Burgundies are starting to hit the market, and what everyone says is true: these are wines you want to buy and cellar. Burghound, for one, just wrote: “I would not only counsel buying [the 2014 whites], but buying aggressively.” Some producers say this is the best vintage in over 20 years. Ben Leroux said if you don’t make great wine in 2014 you need to find another line of work.

Benoit Ente is in the right line of work. He is a top producer, one of those rare winemakers who makes great wines in borderline vintages. In 2014 he made absolutely brilliant wines.

A careful farmer, Benoit believes that controlling yields in the vineyard is the way to achieve the perfect acid-sugar balance necessary to make great white Burgundies. Once he has grown and harvested perfect grapes he can easily perform the kind of non-interventionist winemaking that he likes. He picks on the earlier side to guarantee crisp acidity. In a great vintage like 2014 the results are stunning: wines of purity and balance.

Benoit inherited a tiny 2.4 hectare domaine in Puligny Montrachet which includes some great premier crus. Arnaud Ente, the Meursault specialist who studied under Coche, is Benoit’s brother. Like Arnaud, Benoit’s wines age very well. He uses less new oak than his brother and employs virtually no battonage. The wines spend 12 months in oak and then 6 more in stainless steel–this is as true for his Aligote as it is his Folatieres! The wines are crystalline and have wonderful intensity, but they emphasize elegance and terroir-expression.

Benoit’s wines are considerably more affordable than his brother’s. This has nothing to do with a lack of critical acclaim. Burghound, for example, has just reviewed the 2014s, and gave them rave reviews, with scores that are in line or even a little bit better than Arnaud Ente’s. When Antonio Galloni last reviewed Benoit’s wines he called them among the most impressive in all the Cote de Beaune! And Jon Bonne recently dubbed him “one of the next stars of Burgundy”.

BURGHOUND 89 POINTS: "Notes of petrol and resin add breadth to the mostly white orchard fruit-scented nose though there are background floral nuances present as well. The seductively textured and solidly intense medium-bodied flavors possess good mid-palate concentration along with fine depth on the balanced and persistent finale. This is really quite good for a villages level Chassagne and worth checking out plus it should reward a few years of cellar time too."

eROBERT PARKER 90-92 POINTS: "The 2014 Chassagne-Montrachet Villages has a well defined, precise, almost Puligny-like bouquet with hints of white peach and citrus lemon - precise and detailed - impressive for a village cru. The palate is well balanced, elegant and refined in the mouth, hints of apricot and peach filtering through, but it is really based on the tension and spiciness towards the finish. This is excellent."

VINOUSMEDIA 89 POINTS: "(this bottling, made from multiple parcels, including some stony plots near Puligny-Montrachet, represents 40% of the estate's production in 2014): Pale yellow. Pure aromas of pear, yellow peach and yellow flowers. Ripe, sweet and fine-grained, with captivating minerality giving lift to the middle palate and carrying the classically dry finish." -- Stephen Tanzer

BURGHOUND 92 POINTS: "While there is a trace of exotic character to the citrus-inflected white orchard fruit nose it is more discreet than usual. The medium-bodied flavors are tightly coiled with terrific energy that is so mineral-driven that the bone dry finish is like sucking on tiny stones. This is not the most refined wine here but it is admirably intense. While clearly extremely young this should still be approachable young."

BURGHOUND 93-95 POINTS "DON'T MISS": "A highly restrained nose features notes of cool and ultra-pure citrus, green apple, white flowers, herbal tea and wet stone. There is a distinctly racy mouth feel to the super intense and well-delineated medium weight plus flavors that are strikingly focused on the chiseled, clean, dry and moderately austere finale that delivers stunningly good complexity. I very much like this understated effort as it is an exercise in harmony and refinement and while there is the usual taut muscularity of a classic Corton-Charlemagne, it certainly doesn't lack for elegance either."

eROBERT PARKER 91-93 POINTS: "The 2014 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru, which was still on the less when I tasted it at the domaine, has a crisp, fresh oyster shell-tinged bouquet that opens nicely with aeration. It is just a little austere, not that is detracts from its pleasure. The palate is fresh on the entry with a crisp line of acidity; perhaps a little more austere than other vintages, but that allows the terroir to show through. There is a lovely touch of lemongrass on the finish that prolongs length, completing a fine, quite saline, intriguing contribution to the vintage."

The Beru family has owned the historical Chateau de Beru domain for 400 years. The vineyards were lost to phylloxera in the early 20th century and sat untouched for decades. In 1987 the Comte Eric de Beru began replanting the holdings and in particular the famous Clos Beru. His wife Laurence and their daughter, Athenais, now run the domain. She converted to biodynamic farming in 2004.

The clos (wall) around Clos Beru was built sometime in the 13th century to single out the parcel. 30+ year old vines at 35 to 40 hectoliters per hectare- about half the average in Chablis. The families prized vineyard. Fermentation in older barrique and tonneaux. Again no fining or filtration.

BURGHOUND 91 POINTS "OUTSTANDING": "As with the Morgeot, the trace reduction isn't enough to completely mask the petrol and resin aromas though I would suggest decanting this if you're tempted to try a bottle young. The rich, vibrant and opulent medium weight flavors possess excellent verve and are again shaped by the moderately firm acid spine on the balanced, long and notably dry and austere finish. The ample dry extract confers a generous mouth feel to the mid-palate and this too is overtly powerful."

BURGHOUND 89 POINTS "OUTSTANDING": "A well-layered nose consists of petrol, straw, white and yellow orchard fruit and soft floral hints. There is fine volume and intensity to the fleshy, round and delicious medium weight flavors that terminate in a clean, dry and balanced finale. This is a very solid villages that will need a few years to add overall depth."

Romaric Chavy is the 7th generation of the family to work their vines. The activity of filling bottles only started in 1982 with Romaric’s grandfather – before they supplied everything to the négoce. The Chouet in the domaine’s name refers to Hubert’s ‘first wife’ – when ‘first’ became ‘apparent’ there were some subsequent vintages where the label became only ‘Hubert Chavy’ but Romaric is heading back to the Chavy-Chouet! The domaine’s main market is now in Europe, though the USA was interesting before the recent financial crisis. The domaine is currently managing their vines through ‘lutte raisonée’ and they prefer to plough the soil. The grapes are pressed then stay in tank for three or four days before moving via gravity into the barrels. There’s a light battonage – “only three or four times until the main fermentation is finished – we look for freshness not creaminess. Wines are bottled after about 12 months with quite a lot of CO2, which means they are not quite sparkling, but remain quite fresh.

WINE MAKER - "We try to avoid the sweet vanilla taste."

BURGHOUND 94 POINTS "OUTSTANDING": "Very ripe aromas where the fruit is more white than yellow are complemented by spicy white flower notes merge into rich, full, sweet and racy flavors blessed with plenty of sap and serious length on the solidly structured, punchy and explosive finish. This is also very nicely balanced and should benefit from 5 to 7 years in the cellar first. An excellent vintage for this wine."

eROBERTPARKER 92 POINTS: "The 2010 Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre makes an entrance of which the late Lord Flashheart himself would have been proud: a livewire bouquet with vibrant citrus peel, orange zest, limestone and apple-blossom, and an undercurrent of wax resin scents that look set to become more accentuated by bottle age. The palate is extremely well-balanced with superb precision. There is a strong saline element here, great concentration toward the finish, but not quite the persistency of the 2012. Excellent. Drink now-2028."

VINOUSMEDIA 95+ POINTS: "Readers will have to be patient with the 2010 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre. Some of the other 2010s are showing much more today, but the Montée de Tonnerre is all understatement and class. Still, it is impossible to miss the wine's textural finesse and exceptional overall harmony. Everything is simply in the right place in this majestic, compelling Chablis. A gentle hint of spice frames the finish. "
