ITALY

Italy is home to some of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, and Italian wines are known worldwide for their broad variety. Italy, closely followed by France, is the world’s largest wine producer by volume. Its contribution is about 45–50 million hl per year, and represents about ⅓ of global production. Italian wine is exported around the world and is also extremely popular in Italy. Grapes are grown in almost every region of the country and there are more than one million vineyards under cultivation. Italy's twenty wine regions correspond to the twenty administrative regions. The 73 DOCG wines are located in 15 different regions but most of them are concentrated in Piedmont, Veneto and Tuscany. Among these are appellations appreciated and sought after by wine lovers around the world: Barolo, Barbaresco, and Brunello di Montalcino (colloquially known as the "Killer B's"). Other notable wines that in the latest years gain much attention in the international markets and among specialists are: Amarone della Valpolicella, Prosecco di Conegliano- Valdobbiadene, Taurasi from Campania, Franciacorta sparkling wines from Lombardy, Chianti and Soave, while new wines from the Centre and South of Italy are quickly gaining recognition: Sagrantino, Primitivo, Nero D'Avola among others. The Friuli-Venezia Giulia is world famous for the quality white wines, like Pinot Grigio.

WINE ENTHUSIAST 90 POINTS - "Here’s a wine that sneaks up on you, offering aromas of baked earth, leather, dried berry and a whiff of black olive that slowly emerge after a few minutes in the glass. On the palate, notes of licorice and cooking spice notes accent a core of mature black cherry alongside polished tannins."

NOT ONE TO BE MISSED! The Allegrini estate is based in the Valpolicella region of Italy and represents the highest expression of Valpolicella wines. Gambero Rosso, Italy's most important food and wine publication, rated Allegrini a Star winery with over ten Tre Bicchieri ("Three Glasses"-- their top recognition) awards. Palazzo Della Torre is a “Cru” wine coming from a single vineyard and is known as their “Baby Amarone.” The blend of 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese takes two different paths. Thirty percent of the grapes are left to dry on racks till December, in true Amarone style, and the other seventy percent vinified immediately. The fresh wine is blended with the juice from the dried grapes for a second fermentation and the end result is an absolute sexy wine, deep in ruby red color, with flavors of blackberries and mocha.

JAMES SUCKLING 94 POINTS - "A very ripe style with prune, berry and salted-nut aromas and flavors. Full body, savory intensity and a long, flavorful finish. Lots of juicy, fabulous fruit. Shows the greatness of the vineyard. Drink or hold."

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli provides us with one of the most beautiful tastes of Brunello in 2011. The secret here is that fruit is sourced from the Montosoli cru in the northern side of the appellation that performed very nicely in this warm vintage. The wine reaches excellent balance between power and elegance. It leaves a statement but never feels overwhelming. That intensity is presented in terms of fruit freshness, cherry, blackberry and currant. It also comes forth as spice, tobacco and leather. The mouthfeel is exceedingly smooth and silky. The tannins are integrated and soft. Montosoli is planted to a special clone that is grafted over when the vines die. The clone has never been replaced. Because the vineyard is located on the north side of the appellation, it was protected from the heat this vintage. This wine will be released in April 2016."

We’ve had quite a few customers inquire about Sardinian wines after watching Oprah or Dr. Oz touting the benefits of drinking Cannonau wine. Dr. Oz is a prominent heart surgeon, professor and television personality who has spoken extensively about places in the world with the greatest life expectancy. One of the areas with an unusually high percentage of centenarians is Sardinia off the coast of Italy. Oz attributes the Sardinians longevity to a healthy Mediterranean diet, including the moderate consumption of Cannonau-based wines on a regular basis. It is believed that Cannonau wines from Sardinia have the highest levels of polyphenols of any wine. Polyphenols are full of antioxidants and wonderful for your arteries.

Known as Grenache or Garnacha in other parts of the world, very little Cannonau makes its way to the United States. We have been on the prowl for a great example of this variety at an affordable price and we found it. This small production wine by Antonio Sanguineti is flat out gorgeous, unoaked and pure. It is without a doubt the greatest value priced Cannonau we have ever tasted. We’re not sure whether it will make us live longer, but we are sure it’s delicious. Here’s a toast to your health!

Brilliant ruby in color, on the nose, high-toned red fruits-fresh cherries, red currant and pomegranate predominate along with some earth, pekoe tea and sweet spice nuances. On the palate, the wine is lively, lifted and very smooth. The fruit is perfectly ripe and expressive, once again with red fruits including dusty cherries, red plum and currants. There are no hard edges to this this medium-bodied red which allows for a broad range of food pairings. We recommend serving slightly chilled with easy fare such as fish, chicken or pasta.

Antoniolo...the most dynamic winemaker [in Gattinara] is Rosanna Antoniolo with markedly improved single-vineyard wines... The small DOCG of Gattinara is located far north of the Barolo/ Barbaresco zones in the Alpine foothills close to Lago Maggiore. The soils of this region are more acidic than those of the Langhe, which, paired with the cooler climate and altitude, results in highly fragrant, elegant wines at their best in hot years. Few estates remain in this historic northerly zone, but tenacious Antoniolo, established in 1949, is surely the most dynamic; Antoniolo was the first producer in the DOCG to bottle cru wines, and is one of the only to bottle 100% Nebbiolo without blending in other varietals. Vineyard age (year of planting): 1960, 1970 Soil type: Sub-acid, moranic (soils originating from an ancient glacier), volcanic (rich in minerals).

WINE ADVOCATE 93+ POINTS - "Argiano is among the top producers in Tuscany and the estate's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino offers a glimpse into its formula for success. This is a balanced and forthcoming wine that puts equal emphasis on primary aromas of fresh berry and secondary aromas of oak spice and smoke. The two components suggest careful work in both the vineyard and the winery in what was not always an easy vintage. If Argiano experienced any hardship in 2011, you most certainly would not know, judging from this spectacular wine. I also would like to point out the quality achieved with the tannins and the brightness of the acidity. These characteristics suggest that this wine should hold longer than many of its peers."

Non Confunditur’ is a Latin term that means unique, unmistakable. We christened this wine Non Confunditur as a tribute to Argiano’s prestigious and glorious past. Non Confunditur is the product of the unique combination of Tuscan and French grapes. Since 2002, NC has earned its place alongside the finest Tuscan blends.

NC is a wine with a decisive, full-bodied character, smooth tannins and a persistent finish. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah andSangiovese reveals an exciting potency, with the innate gentleness of Merlot creating a bridge between the evident earthiness of Sangiovese, the aromatic blackcurrant flavour of Cabernet and the warm red berries of Syrah. The result is a generous, rounded red wine, destined for short to medium ageing, with delicious aromas of currants and generous fruit flavours, versatile enough to develop in greater depth during long months in the bottle.

Argiolas has long been the quality leader on the previously overlooked island of Sardegna (Sardinia). The island's Cannonau based wines have become sought after since a daytime TV host suggested that perhaps drinking Cannonau contributed to the islanders' longevity. We make no such health claims but we do enjoy the flavors of Cannonau which turns out to be Grenache (Garnacha). Argiolas Costera is composed of 90% Cannonau, 5% Bovale Sardo and 5% Carignano (Carignan) grown on the calcareous soils of the Costera vineyard.

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The 2009 Montefalco Sagrantino Collepiano offers a modern interpretation of a traditional wine once made by monks. The extra oak intensity leads to soft tones of chocolate, dark cherry and spice. This wine ages in barrique for 22 months. Each producer finds his or her own way to tame the brutal tannins of Sagrantino. One way Marco does this is with oak."

Sagrantino Collepiano symbolises the “Renaissance” of Montefalco as a wine region. This wine’s roots are entrenched in a secular tradition and is produced with Sagrantino, a unique variety grown only in Montefalco. Collepiano is Sagrantino’s area of production, and refers to the gentle slopes that characterise our hills.Densely coloured, almost black ruby red, which develop to garnet with the aging of the wine.Color is intense with ruby red and violet hues. Flavors flow with intense blackberries and plum and notes of leather. A very powerful mouthfeel and ever so velvety and a smooth finish.

The vineyards in Valtellina stretch over steep and stony slopes, where nature has been testing the farmer for centuries. It is an extremely labor-intensive environment for winemaking, and one where labor is rewarded with some of the most beautiful and haunting expressions of the Nebbiolo grape made anywhere. ArPePe is named after the winery’s founder Arturo Pelizzatti Perego. The Perego family is now in it’s fifth-generation of winemakers, and ArPePe is considered by many to be the pinnacle producer of Valtellina.

This Barolo was a revelation to us when we tasted it at an event in Los Angeles featuring numerous wines from small-scale winemakers. Using traditional techniques and working with respect for the environment and terroir, Aurelio Settimo embraces has crafted a great expression of Piedmont's King of Grapes, Nebbiolo. Perhaps the most wonderful thing about this wine is its perfume. It is intensely aromatic with an extraordinary bouquet. This wine from the textbook 2010 vintage is pure, elegant and structured, but approachable with a nice decanting.

WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "The 2010 Barolo is a beautiful wine with a tight and tonic quality that comes forward in distinct pulses of cassis, wild berry, toasted almond and black licorice. No one element is out of place. Bright acidity and finely-tuned tannins give the wine a clean, direct entry in the mouth with the good possibility of a slow and steady aging evolution. Drink: 2016-2028."

This wine, with ICEA organic certification from 2003, is the result of absolutely natural production methods using hand-picked organically grown Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes from our vineyards at Badia a Coltibuono.
WINE MAKER NOTES: "The color is bright ruby, the nose unveils layers of iris, violet, tobacco, black pepper and marasca cherry. The taste is well balanced, tightly knit with supple tannins, mineral notes, a mouth cleansing fresh acidity. Warm and persistent. Pair with first courses such as pasta, meat dishes and moderately aged cheeses."

Badia a Coltibuono is about one thousand years old but its prehistory takes us back to Estrucan times and beyond. As we know it today, Badia a Coltibuono (which means Abbey of the Good Harvest), dates from the middle of the eleventh century. Forest berries, spices, leather, moist earth and dried plum, layered in the aroma. Soft, round taste, well-balanced acidity and clean and persistent aftertaste. Very pleasing, and ready to drink. Coltibuono remains one of the most beloved estates in the Chianti zone. Over the past few years their wines have gained a high level of finesse and quality.

WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - ""The 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva delivers thick lines and more muscle than past vintages. Badia a Coltibuono is known for its streamlined, nuanced and elegant wines. They tend to be thinner in color and consistency in keeping with Sangiovese tradition. This vintage was warmer and the quality of fruit is slightly more pronounced as a result. Black cherry and cassis are followed by cola and grilled herb. Winemaking is simple and straightforward."

ANTONIO GALLONI 90 POINTS - "The 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva offers lovely depth and complexity, with a host of floral, savory and ferrous notes that open up in the glass. All the elements come together effortlessly. Slightly forward overtones in the bouquet make me think the 2011 Riserva won't be especially long-lived, but it is quite pretty and expressive today."
