SYRAH, GRENACHE, VIOGNIER, ETC

Syrah: Syrah (also known as Shiraz) is a dark-skinned grape variety grown throughout the world and used primarily to produce red wine. DNA profiling in 1999 found Syrah to be the offspring of two obscure grapes from southeastern France, Dureze and Monduse Blanche. Syrah should not be confused with Petite Sirah. The style and flavor profile of wines made from Syrah is influenced by the climate where the grapes are grown, with moderate climates (such as the northern Rhone Valley and parts of the Walla Walla AVA in Washington State) tending to produce medium to full-bodied wines with medium-plus to high levels of tannins and flavors of blackberry, mint and black pepper notes. In hot climates (such as the Barossa Valley of Australia and Paso Robles AVA of California), Syrah is more consistently full-bodied with softer tannin, jammier fruit and spice notes of licorice, anise and earthy leather. In many regions the acidity and tannin levels of Syrah allow the wines produced from the grape to have favorable aging potential.

Grenache: Grenache is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world. It ripens late, so it needs hot, dry conditions such as those found in Spain, where the grape most likely originated. It is also grown in Sardina, the south of France, Australia, and California. It is generally spicy, berry-flavored and soft on the palate and produces wine with a relatively high alcohol content, but it needs careful control of yields for best results. Characteristic flavor profiles on Grenache include red fruit flavors (raspberry and strawberry) with a subtle, white pepper spice note. Grenache wines are highly prone to oxidation with even young examples having the potential to show browning (or "bricking") coloration that can be noticed around the rim when evaluating the wine at an angle in the glass. As Grenache ages the wines tend to take on more leather and tar flavors. Wines made from Grenache tend to lack acid, tannin, and color, and it is often blended with other varieties such as Syrah, Mourvedre, Tempranillo, and Cinsaut.

Viognier: Viognier (pronounced vee-oh-nyay) is a white wine grape variety. It is the only permitted grape for the French wine Condrieu in the Rhone Valley. Outside of the Rhône, Viognier can be found in regions of North and South America as well as Australia and New Zealand. In some wine regions, the variety is co-fermented with the red wine grape Syrah where it can contribute to the color and bouquet of the wine. Like Chardonnay, Viognier has the potential to produce full-bodied wines with a lush, soft character. In contrast to Chardonnay, the Viognier varietal has more natural aromatics that include notes of peach, pears, violets and minerality. However, these aromatic notes can be easily destroyed by too much exposure to oxygen which makes barrel fermentation a winemaking technique that requires a high level of skill on the part of any winemaker working with this variety. The potential quality of Viognier is also highly dependent on viticultural practices and climate with the grape requiring a long, warm growing season in order to fully ripen but not a climate that is too hot to where the grape develops high levels of sugars and potential alcohol before its aromatic notes can develop. The grape is naturally a low-yielding variety which can make it a less economically viable planting for some vineyards.

    Producers of Petite Sirah need to take note: there's a young gun out there who's going to show you some new moves! Winemaker Aaron Jackson is one amazing guy! He fully commits to whatever the task at hand is. So being the hardcore surfer that he is, you can imagine how dedicated to winemaking Aaron must be when he has to leave those firing Central Coast point breaks to head for the vineyards! His wines have been staples at our store for years, and it's amazing how he can make Petite Sirah taste so good, keep it complex yet easy to drink, and sell such a tasty wine for a reasonable price!

    Aaron's flagship wine is always a blend of his very best barrels of Petite Sirah. A blend of 5 vineyards all grown on calcareous/limestone soils, this wine shows deep and dark aromatics of blue and black fruits, peppercorn, bay leaf, anise, and tapenade. The palate is big, yet maintains some elegance, with blackberry, blueberry, smoked beef, loads of spice, with firm and gravelly tannins. Only 390 cases produced!

    While he has become known for his insanely delicious Petite Sirahs from Paso Robles, winemaker Aaron Jackson has recently expanded his portfolio and added some new flavors! AEQUOREA - which means "of the sea" in Latin - is focused on single vineyard wines from extreme coastal vineyards amidst San Luis Obispo County.

    Making Viognier is always such a challenge for Aaron, in that he aims for a style so much different than what is typically produced in California. Instead, he strives to make a Viognier that showcases what can be done with the variety on the extremes of the coast where it struggles to ripen. At only 2 miles from the ocean in Pismo Beach, Spanish Springs is on the edge of where Viognier can be grown.     Ambrose's grapes are farmed and harvested specifically to be made into rose, with the Syrah coming from a single vineyard in Bennett Valley, just north of Sonoma, and the Mourvedre coming from Brentwood, just south of Napa near Mount Diablo. At full phenolic ripeness, the grapes are picked at sunrise and brought straight to the winery on Howell Mountain, where they are hand-sorted and dropped gently into a bladder press.

    With a light touch to control for color extraction, the juice flows freely down into the cave for a low and slow fermentation, which preserves its natural acidity and draws out its full flavor. The Syrah (90%) ferments in stainless steel and the Mourvedre (10%) ferments in neutral French oak barrel. The finished wines are blended post-fermentation and aged sur lie in a combination of stainless steel and neutral French oak.

    This wine floored us from the very first sip! Ancient Peaks sits in the Paso Robles appellation, 22 miles south of the city itself, and just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Here, the surrounding peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range act as a gateway between one region to the south that is exceedingly ocean-cooled, and another to the north that is much, much warmer (sometimes downright hot!). When the days heat up in the areas north and east of Margarita Vineyard, the air rises to create a vacuum that pulls marine breezes and fog inland over the peaks, and right through the vineyard. This means the fruit gets ripe, without any "off" flavors, yet the cooling afternoon breezes help the resulting wine to retain freshness and acidity.

    The Renegade is a blend of 80% Syrah, 18% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot, and the wine offers concentrated red and black fruit aromas with suggestions of cedar, smoked bacon and high-toned oak. The palate is prodigious and intense, packed with velvety layers of boysenberry, black cherry, blueberry and cranberry, with trailing hints of vanilla, caramel, coffee and black pepper. The fruit extends lavishly into the finish, braced by fine, integrated tannins and juicy acidity.

    The focus of this two person operation is on small lot, single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay, as well as several other varieties uncommon in Northern Californian vineyards. Sites are carefully chosen and are generally on the cooler end of the spectrum for the planted varieties. Collaboration with dedicated and passionate growers is paramount in the farming of these sites.

    Duncan and Nathan grew up around winemaking in the Napa Valley. Nathan is a second generation cooper and personally builds all of the French oak barrels that are utilized in the ageing of all Arnot-Roberts wines. Over the years Duncan has worked making wine in the Napa Valley in wineries like, Caymus, Groth, Acacia, Kongsgaard. Total production of Arnot-Roberts is around 2,000 cases per year with thirteen individual wines.

    The 2014 Sonoma Coast is a blend of the six vineyards: La Cruz, Baker Lane, Marietta, Clary Ranch, Griffin's Lair and Que Syrah. All were whole cluster fermented with native yeasts, aged in neutral French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

    Last year we attended the inaugural Sonoma County Barrel Auction. This was an event where wineries from throughout Sonoma County gathered to showcase wines that they have not bottled before, and to keep their wines unique, they don't plan on bottling them again! Last week we showcased the unique Pinot Noir from Patz & Hall, perhaps the best Pinot Noir they have ever made. This time, it's an amazing Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon blend from one of our favorite Sonoma County producers...Arrowood!

    Arrowood Winery is pure Sonoma. The winery's influence in the region endures since the first wines were made three decades ago. Created exclusively for the Sonoma County Barrel Auction, Winemaker Kristina Weerner selected the top lots from the vintage to craft a unique blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Syrah comes from the Russian River Valley's acclaimed Saralee's vineyard. It is not uncommon for Arrowood's Syrah from this vineyard to score in the "outstanding" range with famed critic Robert Parker, and the Syrah for this blend was co-fermented with Viognier, which actually makes the wine darker and gives it more aromatics and texture. With that, they blended in 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Smothers-Remick Ridge Vineyard, a phenomenal property that sits roughly 600 feet above the valley floor in the northern Sonoma Mountains. It features 18 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon divided into 11 distinctive blocks that mirror the terroir. Known for its small, flavorful berries, this mountain site produced balanced wines with refined tannins. In the end, Kristina decided the best wine was blended of 70% Syrah and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon...and that's what we have here!

    Only 10 cases were bottled, and you can't get this wine at the winery, even if you're a member of their wine club! This is a gorgeous red blend, and it displays a lovely ruby/garnet color with aromas of freshly crushed cherry, raspberry, red currant, strawberry shortcake, vanilla, and hints of oak. After a short bit of time to breathe, aromas of smoke, Asian spices, and grilled meat begin to emerge. On the palate, the subtle hints of spice continues, along with black fruit, black cherry, a briary quality, cured meat, and plum. The finish is fairly long, with pronounced tannins that give a nice frame to the wine. Absolutely delectable, this is a wine that can easily be enjoyed now, but will continue to develop nicely in the cellar for another 7-10 years!

    The 2013 blend is comprised of three Grenache clones; Tablas Creek Vine Selection #2, 362, 814 (Spain). The grapes were hand-picked and fermented separately by vineyard block in five-ton, open-top tanks. After daily pump-overs (for color and tannin extraction) for 10 days, the wines were aged for 10 months in a mix of new and used French oak barrels. The Grenache was racked once in the spring of 2014, and once more just prior to bottling in January 2015.

    Deep ruby with a ruby-black core, the 2013 Austin Hope Grenache has classic aromas of dried black cherries, strawberries, and red currants along with hints of rose petal and black pepper, leather and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is voluptuous and rich with nice firm, yet round tannins. Bold flavors of dark cherry, boysenberry and strawberry lead to a dusty leather note, marked by undertones of cinnamon and clove. The finish is lively with juicy acidity while a mix of spiced berry fruits linger on the palate.

The wine offers a lovely blackberry and plum core which is surrounded by cinnamon and sweet applewood smoke notes, with orange-peel-candied-in-chocolate elements. Fine tannins and elegant acidity combine with the pure fruit and spices for a long, seamless finish. Only 145 cases were produced!

    Last year, winemaker Edgar Torres brought us a couple wines that were simply amazing! This year is no different, other than the fact that he has a new wine that is really gets us excited! His latest bottling is called "Toro de Paso", a blend of Tempranillo, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Tempranillo and Grenache are a couple of the primary grapes in many Spanish reds, and coming from this Central Coast region, calling this wine Toro de Paso just made sense.

These give way to a medium to full-bodied wine that has solid concentration, a focused, streamlined texture and building tannin, all of which suggest it will evolve nicely.
