Our initial Wine of the Month 2 has sold out (and it was lovely wine!) but fortune has smiled upon us once more! We happened to taste this famed Single Vineyard Altamira Malbec and not only was the juice stellar-- the price was equally impressive! The main impetus behind our 'Wine of the Month' and 'Wine of the Month 2' programs is to find and present wines that offer amazing quality and value-- we want wines that will make you wonder who the crazy person is pricing it so low. So when we tasted this, and found out the price, we knew we found our star!
Located in the heart of the Uco Valley Altamira, Mendoza, Argentina, this is considered by many to be the ideal place in not only Argentina but pretty much the world to grow and make Malbec grapes and wines. The terroir, the altitude, climate, soils, everything-- these are ideal for this grape and the evidence is in the glass. The nose is filled with rich red and dark fruits and berries, pencil lead, minerality, rosebush and a touch of red licorice. The palate continues what the nose began with lush ripe fruits (concentrated plum and redcurrant) that are kept in perfect balance by excellent body: tannins and acidity keep this beauty grounded! Layers of minerality, earth, floral notes (midnight garden) and dark spices round this out, presenting a kaleidoscope of flavors bound within a lush but elevated mouthfeel, all working together to present a beautifully unified, whole wine.
