100% Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca)
This is a serious little Valtellina rosso, a light-bodied style of Nebbiolo from a sub-alpine valley in Lombardy, close to the Swiss border. It has a soaring acidity that's almost citric, with a lean fruit texture and delicate floral and red berry notes that join a strong woodsy herb-and-spice streak that's typical of Nebbiolo. A smattering of grippy, earthy tannins complete the picture of a perfect wine to serve lightly cooled (58F) with pork loin with lemon, herbs and pepper, or simply some cured meats and mild, semi-soft cheeses (goat, sheep).
"Valtellina is a marvelous wine growing zone on the Italian, Swiss border, along the eastern Alps. Here in the Lombardy region there is an immense history as being the crossroads of Europe. The region runs east-west following the Adda river which spills out into Lake Como. There are 5 subzones that comprise all 2100 hectares of the region, which are marked by steep terraces, held by millennia-old stone walls.
