ORGANICALLY FARMED

This site's character makes for a more nuanced Barolo that's dominated by soft, red-toned fruit, and is very approachable early on with time in the glass (although in "top" vintages it's more expressive at 8 years of age and on). As a powerful mid-weight Barolo, it stylistically lies between their classic Barolo and their other single vineyard bottlings. Because of 2019's long growing season, this bottling shows greater depth, some riper tones, and a firmer tannic structure. The plots for this bottling face a bit more of the temperate afternoon sun (though in the shadow of La Morra's high ridge) on the relatively low ridge near the ampitheater valley of the town of Barolo.

KERIN O'KEEFE 95 POINTS - "Brezza’s 2019 Castellero is smooth, bright and delicious, delivering juicy red berry, baking spice, crushed mint, orange zest and star anise aromas that carry over to the racy, focused palate. It’s loaded with youthful tension and shows great aging potential. Drink 2029–2044. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O’Keefe April 2023 ©kerinokeefe.com"

ANTONIO GALLONI, VINOUS 94 POINTS - "The 2019 Barolo Castellero is a deep, beguiling wine. Deeply pitched spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs meld into a core of dark-toned fruit. Virile and imposing, with notable inner sweetness, the Castellero is stunning. There's a bit of new oak influence, but it is not dominant. This is another superb Barolo from Brezza. "

The historical Brezza family winery goes back to 1885, and to 1910 with their first branded bottling. Based around the town of Barolo itself, their wines are traditional expressions of the subzone's elegantly-styled Barolos. Aging is in classic large (3000L), untoasted Slavonian oak barrels. The Barolos are neither filtered nor fined.
