100% Tempranillo
"Hado" is a great introduction to today's high-altitude Rioja reds: bright, herb- and floral-tinged red fruits, a layer of earthy, grainy tannins and only a subtle infusion of woodsy oak.
Fifth generation winemaker Carlos San Pedro started Bodegas Pujanza in 1998 to help bring his region's wines back to their roots. In straightforward fashion, his "modern" Riojas reflect the gorgeous high-altitude area around the town of Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa. Along with more freshness and vibrancy, Riojas like this rely less on the taste of new oak, and more on seasoned French oak barrels that contribute subtler woodsy spice accents.
After a little extra time in bottle, the 2020 "Hado" is developing a mellower foundation, but maintains the fresh, lively core the Rioja Alavesa region is known for. You get floral hints and subtle, savory herbal and spice accents, all mingling with lightly sun-kissed red fruits macerated in alcohol. A warm, balsamy depth grows in the mid-palate before cleaning up with an almost citrusy, lightly pithy and dry finish that leaves woodsy echoes of violet and a stony earthiness. The tannins provide grounding with a softly grainy grip in the finish, enhancing the earthy feel to the wine.
It's a good bottle for the table, with things like hearty appetizers, roasted or grilled chicken, pork chops, stuffed red & yellow bell peppers, or just some cured meats and semi-aged cheeses. Try it at a cool 62F.
WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "Like the other wines from this vintage, the 2020 Hado is a little lower in alcohol and has more freshness and acidity than the 2019 I also tasted next to it. This is still quite ripe at 14.5% alcohol but comes through as balanced. It comes from Tempranillo grapes from the estate vineyard and fermented in stainless steel and matured in barrique for one year. He harvested earlier in 2020 than in 2019, despite being a cooler year, when he had fun during the harvest. It's tight and still young, powerful and with abundant chalky tannins."
