  1. AIA VECCHIA 2016 LAGONE

    Item #: i_381401
    Bottle Size: 750ml
One of our favorite everyday value reds just got better! With the help of one of the best vintages for Tuscany, Aia Vecchia has given us another reason to love Super Tuscans. This estate has been bringing us incredible value since the 90's with the help of the late legendary winemaker of Ornellaia, Tibor Gal, who assisted them in the start of their own winery. The Pellegrini estates include vineyards in some of the most reputable spots in Bolgheri. The home to some of the most well-known Super Tuscans in the world including the highly regarded, Sassicaia. The one place where Bordeaux varietals take precedence over any native Italian grape.

The Pellegrini family have been grape growers for many generations and have sold their grapes to some of the Top Super Tuscan houses for many years. Their property, Casavecchia, is adjacent to the highly regarded Ornellaia and shares many attributes of its more famous neighbor. Somehow, even in this high rent district, Aia Vecchia has brought us an affordable interpretation of this fantastic Mediterranean climate location. This fantastic Super Tuscan is drinking exceptionally well right now!

  2. AIA VECCHIA 2016 SOR UGO SUPER TUSCAN BOLGHERI SUPERIORE

    Item #: i_302523
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 93
WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Sor Ugo offers thickly extracted aromas of blackberry preserves and cherry confit with smoke, tar and sweet spice. This is a full-bodied red (with 15% alcohol) that wraps thickly over the palate, showing rich density and concentration along the way. Campfire ash and hickory smoke appear on the close. The blend is 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot aged in barrique for 18 months. Some 30,000 bottles were made."

When the wine called "Sassicaia" (meaning "place with a lot of rocks", in reference to the vineyards near Categneto Carducci) was released in 1968, the phenomenon of the super]Tuscan was born. Sharing a rarefied position, with vineyards intimately proximate to the origin of this most famous super]Tuscan wine, the Pellegrini family, the owners of Aia Vecchia, have been grape growers in the area for several generations. Owning seventy]four acres of the estates under the Bolgheri DOC, in some of the most favored locations, Aia Vecchia is not only emulating, but surpassing the quality of their more famed neighbors with their brilliant rendition of a super-Tuscan Bordeaux-style blend: Aia Vecchia Sor Ugo.
Characteristics: a long lasting, intense wine continually unfolding in aroma, with notes of spices and forest fruits; its great concentration and structure, the natural expression of the warmth and strength of its territory make it powerful, mineral, rich, complex and evident on the nose and palate.

  3. ARGIANO 2016 NON-CONFUNDITUR SUPER TUSCAN

    Item #: i_302116
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    James Suckling: 93
JAMES SUCKLING 93 POINTS - "This is beautiful on the nose, showing lots of brambly notes, ranging from undergrowth and forest floor to elderberries, raspberry bush and dried herbs. Full-bodied, tight and very elegant, framed by linear tannins and bright acidity."

NC is a wine with a decisive, full-bodied character, smooth tannins and a persistent finish. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah andSangiovese reveals an exciting potency, with the innate gentleness of Merlot creating a bridge between the evident earthiness of Sangiovese, the aromatic blackcurrant flavour of Cabernet and the warm red berries of Syrah. The result is a generous, rounded red wine, destined for short to medium ageing, with delicious aromas of currants and generous fruit flavours, versatile enough to develop in greater depth during long months in the bottle.

    James Suckling: 98
JAMES SUCKLING 98 POINTS - "Very complex aromas of fresh flowers, blackberries and black licorice follow through to a full body, integrated tannins and a long and linear finish. Focused and racy. The tannins are so polished. Better in 2022, but already such a joy to try."

WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Petit Verdot (25%), Merlot (20%) and Sangiovese (5%), the 2016 Solengo is a terrific wine and I enjoyed my sample down to the very last drop that I coaxed from the bottle with happy enthusiasm. This is a full-bodied red (but not in an exaggerated manner) with plump and fruit-forward aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, plum, spice and sweet tobacco. The wine is balanced with excellent depth and mouthfeel momentum. I highly recommend this wine from both the 2015 and 2016 vintages, which are both terrific. Some 25,000 bottles were made. Drink through 2035."

This is a darkly saturated and rich Tuscan blend that delivers so much pleasure on all levels. There is softness, intensity, complexity and length. This is a stunning wine with excellent engineering and execution. This is definitely a wine I will remember."

    James Suckling: 96-97
    EU Certified Organic

WINE ADVOCATE 98 POINTS - "I'm hardly surprised to report that Fontodi's 2015 Flaccianello della Pieve is one of the best wines recorded in this report of new releases from Tuscany. This wine sits as tall and as proud as the Colosseum in Rome or the Pyramids of Giza in its undeniable glory and beauty. It would be impossible to exaggerate its many lasting attributes and qualities. Perhaps the most remarkable is the smooth and seamless nature of its many complicated moving parts. It produces abundant power, intensity and elegance as if this were the easiest accomplishment in the world. But we all know that's far from the truth. Despite the heat of the vintage, this wine is constructed with firm building blocks as if it were from a cooler year. That's the Panzano magic in a nutshell. This vintage is very young and tight, and you need to exercise patience to allow it enough time to evolve."

JAMES SUCKLING 96-97 POINTS - "A powerful, full-bodied red with a silky and minerally character. Hints of smoke and wet earth. Great length and beauty."

WINE SPECTATOR 96 POINTS - "Rich and opulent, with a sheen to the black currant and blackberry fruit flavors. Additional notes of thyme, leather, mineral and tar add depth, while the burly tannins still ride roughshod on the finish. Nonetheless, all the components are there and this shows fine length. A more muscular style for this wine, reflecting the vintage. Sangiovese. Best from 2021 through 2035."

    Wine Advocate: 95
WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "Grattamacco claims the distinction of having planted the first head-trained alberello vineyard in the Bolgheri area, in the 1970s, and its fruit has produced a long line of wines wines rated 90+. The 2015 Bolgheri Superiore l'Alberello is among the best I have sampled. The wine opens to harmonious notes of smoke and tar and shows elegant mineral definition with sweet oak spice and lots of rich dark fruit at its core. The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. A mere 8,000 bottles were produced."

  11. LA MOZZA 2016 MORELLINO "PERAZZI

    Item #: i_303570
    Bottle Size: 750ml
Winery Notes - "Juicy dark fruit mingles with spice and licorice on the palate. The bright, ripe cherry and soft texture."

Mario Batali, Joe and Lidia Bastianich have partnered to create this wonderful Morellino di Scansano. The La Mozza Vineyard is near Scansano, a village in southern Tuscany, southwest of Montalcino. Perazzi is named after the fruit trees that grow on the estate and bear a pear-like fruit, which is depicted on the label. In Tuscany, the Sangiovese grape is known by several names, from Chianti to Brunello to Morellino, depending on where it is grown. Morellino means "little blackish one" because of the dark color of the grape. In the hot Maremma zone, the grapes are exposed to a more Mediterranean climate with enough heat to tone down Sangiovese's signature acidity, producing juicier fruit and a jammy flavor. I Perazzi was created to be unlike most other Morellinos, which see little or no time in oak.

  12. LISINI 2015 "SAN BIAGIO" TOSCANA IGT

    Item #: i_305856
    Bottle Size: 750ml
A delicious pure Sangiovese from Montalcino that emphasizes fresh fruit and quaffability! The vineyards for San Biagio, though not classified to produce Brunello or Rosso, are farmed in the same way as their other Sangiovese sites. The vineyards range in elevation from 300 to 350 meters above sea level. Fermented in stainless steel on the skins for 14-18 days, then racked and clarified by decantation rather than filtration prior to bottling.

Made from the youngest Sangiovese vines, the juice is treated gently with cool temperatures & unoaked; the resulting wine is driven by fresh red and black cherry, with an appetizing nuttiness reminiscent of walnut and a subtle dried herbal quality to the tannins. While the 14% abv provides a vinous warmth, the body is lightened up by a bright acidity; the final result is the "sunlight held together by water" that Tuscan native Galileo Galilei wrote of. It's a supremely accessible and uncomplicated style of wine for Montalcino. This is the wine you serve lightly chilled (58-60)F.

  14. MAZZEI 2014 PHILIP

    Item #: i_302490
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    James Suckling: 92
VINOUS MEDIA 93 POINTS - "The 2014 Philip is Mazzei's 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from estate vineyards in both Chianti Classico and Maremma. Ripeness and textural depth are pushed to the limit in this powerful, super-concentrated wine. Although not at all subtle, the 2014 speaks with distinction. Time in the glass adds brightness to the dark red cherry and plum notes in this plush, inviting wine. It will be interesting to see how the Philip ages. It is certainly impressive as a young wine."

Although the Mazzei family has been producing wines for 24 generations in Chianti, they are perhaps proudest of the mark their ancestors have left on history. Philip Mazzei was a contemporary and close friend of Thomas Jefferson who was known to enjoy fine wine from around the world and wrote extensively about the subject.

When Jefferson wasn’t writing about wine, he penned other significant documents which you may have heard of. Yes, the Declaration of Independence was pretty significant! The great doctrine "All men are created equal" incorporated into the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson, was paraphrased from the writings of his friend, Philip Mazzei. As they say, the rest is history!

Philip is an extraordinary wine created to honor the memory of Philip Mazzei - a passionate grape grower, forward thinker, and patriot - and highlight the Mazzei family's special connection to the American people. The label on the bottle really catches your eye and reflects Philip as he appeared during the American Revolution.

This wine is a blend of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon grapes selected from Mazzei's Tuscan properties. It is silky smooth with abundant, ripe fruit and is in the perfect spot in its evolution for drinking. Enjoy!

  15. OCCHIPINTI 2018 SP68 ROSSO IGT

    Item #: i_302612
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    ORGANICALLY FARMED

Named for the road going past the winery, SP68 is a blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato made from young vines and new plantings. Many think of Sicily as a source of bulk wine, but Arianna’s are soulful and balanced, fresh and lively. The Nero imparts rich dark red fruits and the Frappato gives a high-toned raspberry note, a perfect balance of power and finesse. The wine is energetic and electric, bursting with flavors of tart cherry, raspberry and herbs and soft tannins, making this one of the best values in her lineup. This is a wine we would heartily recommend to be served slightly chilled with food.

ANTONIO GALLONI; VINOUS 91 POINTS - "Deep red. Perfumed aromas and flavors of violet, minerals and spicy dark plums. Very juicy and fresh in the mouth, with noteworthy salinity on the long suave finish."

Luscious blue and black fruits dance with crisp cassis, smoky minerals, exotic spices, pressed herbs, potpourri and cigar wrapper in this unabashedly seductive big red. Tannins are burly but silky, complemented by surprisingly vibrant acidity, a sweet inner perfume and a sturdy core of smoky, savory minerals. Perticaia, located in the heart of Montefalco in Umbria, is the source of some of central Italy's best wines. This family estate draws its inspiration not only from the past (Perticaia means "plow" in Etruscan) but from the future, employing both natural and modern techniques to craft wines that are dazzling in their complexity, flavor profile and structure. This delicious Umbria Rosso-a blend of Sangiovese, Colorino, and Merlot-is fresh and juicy while tantalizingly long and complex. An amazing value that simply begs for pasta or porchetta.

    Bottle Size: 750ml

"If there is one estate that embodies the potential of Carmignano, Piaggia just might be it." - Antonio Galloni

"The Carmignano Riserva is simply the best of the appellation." - The Wine Advocate

ANTONIO GALLONI; VINOUS 95 POINTS - "Piaggia's 2015 Carmignano Il Sasso is rich, ample and voluptuous in what is a very representative expression of the year. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice, tobacco and dried herbs develop in the glass, but the 2015 is all about fruit intensity and texture. There is not much subtlety here, but wow, is the 2015 gorgeous."

If there's one thing you need to know about Piaggia, it's that it's from the one-and-only Mauro Vannuci. One of the most passionate people in Italian wine, this is a guy that when he does something, he really pulls out all the stops.

His first oenologist was Alberto Antonini (one of true legends in Tuscan wine), and he hired agronomist Federico Curtaz (of Angelo Gaia fame) to manage his vineyards. After a time, he put his faith in a young student of Anonini's, the immensely talented Emiliano Falsini. In other words, there is no better team in Italian wine.

Piaggia is located right in the heart of Carmignano, and Il Sasso is from the cru of Santa Cristina in Mezzana at 250 meters above sea level. This outstanding site is farmed organically and planted with 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, and 10% Merlot. It's fermented with indigenous yeasts and macerated on the skins in small, 40-50 hectoliter tanks for three weeks, followed by aging in used French oak for 15 months and six months in bottle.

We don't need to add much to the remarkable words already written by the eminent critics above, but we think this wine is an absolute heartbreaker, and for just cents on the dollar when compared to Tuscany's more famous "-aias" and "Super Tuscans," an unbelievable bargain!

Piaggia is a practicing organic winery. Integrated insect and disease control is followed. Organic fertilizers, copper and sulphur-based products are mainly used, but the vineyards see no insecticides or herbicides.

  20. QUINTARELLI 2011 ROSSO CA DEL MERLO

    Item #: i_305709
    Bottle Size: 750ml
The wines of Quintarelli are more a celebration of a region and its history and techniques than of specific grape varieties or terroirs. They are really more about the art of the blend, the patience of extended aging in cask and bottle, and the use of appassimento and ripasso techniques to further enhance complexity and age-worthiness. That’s why Cà del Merlo as a single-vineyard expression is a bit of an anomaly. Rather than being a single-vineyard wine, it is the opportunity for the Quintarellis to have a little more freedom with the blend outside of the school of Valpolicella. Always more primary than the Valpolicella, it showcases dark, palate-staining fruit that one must marvel at, given the wine’s age. Cà del Merlo is succulent and luscious, balanced beautifully by the imprint of the stony limestone and basalt hills on which the grapes are grown.

    James Suckling: 92
JAMEs SUCKLING 92 POINTS - "A juicy and ripe red with dried berry and chocolate. Medium body with chewy and soft tannins. Flavorful finish. Drink or hold. "

WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "The 2015 Maremma Toscana Le Sughere di Frassinello is a great value blend of 50% Sangioveto, 25% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon (aged in French oak for one year). This wine boasts a proven track record for its consistent value and accessibility and can be counted on for both. It releases a steady flow of dark fruit and spice aromas that build in momentum. The mouthfeel is generous and softly velvety in texture, especially in this warm vintage."

We've been following the Rocca di Frassinello estate for a number of years; bring Chateau Lafite into a joint venture on the Tuscan coast with Chianti's much heralded Castellare estate and you have our attention. Time and again, our favorite bottling from Frassinello has been the "Le Sughere di Frassinello." "Le Sughere" is meant as second wine from the large Frassinello estate, next to the more age-worthy top wine simply called "Rocca di Frassinello." However, there is so much more charm and immediate pleasure in "Le Sughere di Frassinello" that we always want to go back this wine.

History and Heritage: A Timeless Landscape
Tenutu di Arceno has been a center for winemaking and agriculture for more than a thousand years. The estate is located near the fork of two rivers: the Ambra, which flows to Florence, and the Ombrone, which flows to the Mediterranean. In ancient times, this area was a nexus of the Etruscan civilization. In honor of its history, the name Arceno comes from the Etruscan word Archè, meaning "point of origin".

The Tenuta di Arceno eventually made its way into the hands of two historically prominent and well-respected Italian families – the Del Taja and Piccolomini. The Del Taja family began purchasing the land parcel by parcel in 1504, expanding the estate and adding architectural improvements. In 1829 the Del Tajas sold the property to the Piccolomini, one of the most illustrious families of Siena, who created the splendid romantic gardens, lake, and outdoor structures that still stand today.? Continuing its history of family ownership, Tenuta di Arceno was acquired by Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke in 1994.

Tenuta di Arceno: A Modern Days Estate with a Rich History
Acquired by Barbara Banke and Jess Jackson in 1994, Tenuta di Arceno is on one of the region's most historic estates, comprised of 2,500 acres (1,011 hectares), only 220 (89 hectares) of which are planted to vines. The vineyards of Arceno possess an enviable diversity of elevations, facings, soils and meso-climates, a situation that is ideal for the cultivation of Sangiovese as well as the "international" varieties—Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon primary among them.

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The 2015 Il Fauno di Arcanum is a robust and thickly layered blend of 59% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot. This wine offers terrific value, especially to those who prize soft richness and concentration in their blended Tuscan reds. This beautiful, medium to full-bodied wine would pair seamlessly with grilled or roasted meats. The warmth and sheer exuberance of the vintage will put a big smile on your face."

The Tenuta di Arceno estate lies in the hills of the Chianti region in central Tuscany between Florence and Siena, near Castelnuovo Berardenga. Il Fauno, the mythological Roman god of nature, the countryside and the woods, watches over the estate and acts as its protector. Il Fauno di Arcanum is a Bordeaux-style blend that embodies the diversity of the estate, and is sourced primarily from the Di Sotto, La Curva, Colombaio and San Giovanni blocks. Located in the lower southwest section of the estate, in a warmer, exposed subsection that ripens early, the soils possess a significant amount of clay, with good water retention, and produce wines that tend to be more voluptuous and lush.

    Item #: i_301238
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 98
WINE ADVOCATE 98 POINTS - "The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is a wine of extreme complexity and precision. It offers monumental depth with profound layers of black fruit, coffee, licorice and baking chocolate. I tasted this 2016 vintage beside the less-impactful 2015 vintage (which was reviewed last year). These two editions are very different when compared side to side, and this 2016 release is clearly superior in terms of the quality, clarity and intensity of its offerings. This Ornellaia delivers glossy shine and a polished texture that segues to important richness, concentration and textural fiber. It wraps thickly over the palate, imparting waves of sweet dark fruit and dark spice that linger for many long minutes. This beautiful wine is hitting the market now, but collectors will want to put it straight into their cellars for safekeeping."

ANTONIO GALLONI; VINOUS 96+ POINTS - "Just bottled, the 2016 Ornellaia is a dense, powerful wine. Naturally, the 2016 is just at the beginning of its life, but I am struck by how polished the tannins are for such a young wine. Ornellaia is at its best starting around age ten, but there is little doubt the 2016 is a hugely promising wine. Black cherry, chocolate, plum, new leather and a range of spice notes all build into a veritable crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures." - Antonio Galloni (Mar 2019)

WINE SPECTATOR 96 POINTS - "Black currant, plum, cedar, lead pencil and toasty, spicy elements highlight this intense red. Muscular tannins line the extended finish, leaving a peppery impression. The parts are all there but need time to integrate. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2023 through 2043. From Italy." — B.S. (May 22, 2019) Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was founded in 1981, in a beautiful, unspoiled part of Tuscany. From the outset, their mission was to produce outstanding wines. Since then passion and dedication, coupled with a unique terroir and an extraordinary microclimate, has brought the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia's prestigious labels great success and recognition as one of the most important wineries in the world.

The vineyards of Arceno possess an enviable diversity of elevations, facings, soils and meso-climates, a situation that is ideal for the cultivation of Sangiovese as well as the "international" varieties—Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon primary among them.

WINE ADVOCATE 96+ POINTS - "The 2013 Arcanum is a blend of 73% Cabernet Franc with smaller parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Franc element is obviously strongest, and you get steely notes of black fruit follow by wild sage and rosemary oil. This is a powerful and thickly layered red wine that pushes the boundaries of extract and intensity, especially for a Tuscan red wine. Off the top of my head, I can count maybe ten wines from the region that take on such a full-bodied and opulent approach. This wine should age forward for many years to come."

Arcanum is the pinnacle of the estate’s offerings. Based on Cabernet Franc, the true signature of the estate, this remarkable wine is built to age yet is drinkable young, offering aromas of violets, roses and raspberries, with long and delicate spice notes; it is a wine that is seductive yet subtle. Arcanum is sourced primarily from the Apparita and Belvedere blocks of Cabernet Franc. With superb exposure and sandy clay soils, each year these blocks shine to produce the finest expression of the variety, and the leading wine of the estate.
