It's easy to be enamored by the red wines Tuscany: with their warm, savory-tinged fruit, they evoke images of rolling, sun-drenched hills dotted with olive trees and ancient watchtowers. is one of our regular favorites, as its quality consistently exceeds its price! This time around, we're offering the 2019 bottling, which shows the balanced generosity of delicious concentration and lively intensity provided by that wonderful growing season.

Petrolo's home is the Upper Arno River Valley below Florence, tucked in a protected area between the Chianti and Pratomagno mountain ranges (Leonardo da Vinci loved this area, and you can find its characteristic craggy rock formations in the background of the Mona Lisa). This historic wine region goes back to the Etruscans, but amongst wine lovers it's best known for its role in the Super-Tuscan movement (with benchmark wines like Oreno, Il Borro, and Petrolo's own Gallatrona bottling). The dramatic climate makes for expressive, succulent wines that tend to display more energetic freshness than you tend to find in coastal Tuscans. Inspired by Bordeaux but tasting Tuscan, "Torrione" is 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the small collection of vineyards around the gorgeous estate.

Petrolo is headed by the charismatic Luca Sanjust (proprietor and lead winemaker) who, with hard work and a progressive mindset, has turned a small family affair into an internationally recognized winery. Step by step they returned the vineyards to their prime, halting the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, becoming a certified organic producer. After enjoying this wine, you might consider visiting this wonderful estate the next time you're in Tuscany!

JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS - "Very perfumed with sweet-berry and fresh-flower aromas that already show brightness and beauty...Full-bodied with very well-integrated tannins and pure, vivid fruit at the finish. This is all in finesse and depth. Drinkable now..."

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The Petrolo 2019 Torrione is Sangiovese with with smaller parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This is a terrific wine with an exciting delivery of fresh and bold fruit that recalls pressed cherry and wild plum. One of the main features of the 2019 vintage is that standout concentration. The wine delivers good texture and richness, yet the intensity is well played and contained. A lingering note of sweetness that I also notice on Petrolo's other 2019 releases is present here."
