  3. BARONE RICASOLI "BROLIO RISERVA" 2016 CHIANTI CLASSICO

    Item #: i_305716
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 93
    Wine Spectator: 93
    James Suckling: 93
    80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio is a terrific wine that lives up to our expectations of a Riserva, while maintaining that playful informality that you don't get in the estate's more contemplative Gran Selezione. Indeed, the Riserva category of Chianti Classico has been largely overlooked ever since Gran Selezione came onto the scene some seven years ago, thus knocking Riserva off the top of the quality pyramid. This wine reminds you why you should take a closer look at Riserva. The bright aromas of dark cherry, spice and tilled earth are fresh and cheerful and are exactly why we are attracted to Chianti Classico in the first place. The blend here is 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in new and used tonneaux for 18 months. The mouthfeel is slender and fresh, making this a perfect wine for slices of steak, or tagliata, with porcini mushrooms. "

WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "n expression of fresh cherry greets the nose in this taut red, yet this remains austere on the palate, with fruit, iron, earth and oak spice flavors bound up in a grip of tannins. Everything is in the right place, but this needs time. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2022 through 2042. "

JAMES SUCKLING 93 POINTS - "This is a fantastic Chianti Classico Riserva that displays blackcurrants, dark plums, redder plums, tulips and cedar. Medium to full body, some really restrained and attractive tannins and a tangy finish. Drink now."

  7. BISSON 2018 CINQUE TERRE BIANCO "MAREA"

    Item #: i_302834
    Bottle Size: 750ML
Enoteca Bisson is one of the finer wineries in Liguria and it's not often we're able to offer a Cinque Terre white as few make it to the US. Many of our customers return from romantic trips along the Ligurian coastline hoping to find wines from Cinque Terre and we're happy to be able to offer this fantastic wine.

Rosenthal Imports - "Made from a blend of several traditional local grape varieties: Bosco (60% of the blend), Vermentino (20%) and Albarola (20%). The vineyards that produce this wine are situated on south-facing slopes in the hamlet of Volastra in the town of Riomaggiore, the heart of the breathtaking Cinque Terre region. In this instance, [winemaker] Pierluigi Lugano opts to leave this cuvée on the lees for an extended period of time, respecting the old traditions of the region. The result is a full-bodied, earthy wine of immense character, almost briny, with a deeper golden tint to its color than is found in his other whites and marked by the aromas of heather, broom and juniper."

  9. BRAIDA 2016 MONTEBRUNA BARBERA

    Item #: i_301229
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Spectator: 91
    James Suckling: 91
JAMES SUCKLING 91 POINTS - "Shows blackberries, balsamic and plenty of cloves, vanilla and roasted herbs. Full body, chewy tannins and a succulent finish."

We are excited to share our bounty of beautiful Barbera wines from Braida. This winery was founded over fifty years ago in Piedmont by Giacomo Bologna who realized the inherent potential of the Barbera grape. Up to that point, others were content to produce simple table wines, which lacked complexity or ageability. Controlling yields in the vineyard and employing strict winemaking practices in the cellar greatly improved the quality of the wine. Giacomo also began using French barriques to age his wine, which was a practice unknown at that time among Barbera winemakers.

Today, the third generation of the family continues their pursuit of elevating the Barbera grape to the status of noble grapes, which is normally reserved for other international varieties. Their efforts have paid off and are apparent in every sip you take. These are fantastic wines of purity and depth.

With strict attention to detail, Braida produces exceptional wines. The Bricco Dell'Uccellone and Ai Suma bottlings are serious wines, which demonstrate the heights which the Barbera grape can attain. The quality is outstanding with a textural mouth feel which is polished from start to finish.

  11. CAPANNA 2018 ROSSO DI MONTALCINO

    Item #: i_306109
    Bottle Size: 750ml
If you haven't heard anything about the 2015 vintage in Italy's Brunello di Montalcino region then you've done a pretty exceptional job of quarantining. Needless to say the wines are the stuff of legend. The vintage has been given a perfect grade by many different publications and it's release was as highly anticipated as any we've seen in the last decade.

Now let's talk about Capanna. Capanna has been around since the beginnings of the appellation of Brunello di Montalcino. They are one of the original 7 wineries that founded the Consorzia (The governing body for the region). They also are located in what is widely considered to be Montalcino's grand cru, the area known as Montosoli. You combine that quality of terroir with their strictly traditional methods of winemaking and attention to detail; and it makes for some of the purest most mouth wateringly delicious Sangiovese in Italy. Capanna has the street credit to back it up as well with the 2015 Brunello getting a 95 point score from Antonio Galloni's Vinous.

Something else from Capanna that you might be interested in is their Rosso di Montalcino. If you haven't heard of Rosso di Montalcino, AKA "Baby Brunello", then you have been missing out. It is an Italian wine lover's best friend but also their most closely guarded secret. It is the same fruit that goes into the legendary wines of Brunello di Montalcino but with less strict ageing requirements. So you get to enjoy it sooner while you wait for your Brunello's to mature. Capanna's rosso is absolute magic in a bottle. It is so fresh and delicious. In fact it basically is the perfect example of the term "Baby Brunello" as the fruit is of the same quality that goes into Capanna's heralded Brunello and it is aged in wood for almost as long. (A full 18 months. Brunello requires 24 months) This wine is an absolute steal for the price and certainly wont last long especially with the 93 point score from Antonio Galloni's Vinous. This is a serious deal that should be taken advantage of.

ANTONIO GALLONI; VINOUS 93 POINTS - "Lively medium red. Pure, very refreshing aromas and flavors of raspberry, licorice and violet on the drop-dead gorgeous nose. Then sweet and pliant, boasting delightful energy and balance, with the red fruits and subtle herbal notes conveying a distinct coolness on the mineral, vibrant and very long finish. A real essence of Sangiovese, this is an absolutely splendid Rosso di Montalcino. Well done." Ian D'Agata

  12. CASTELLO ROMITORIO 2016 IL TORO

    Item #: i_301646
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 95
Il Toro is an elegant blend of Syrah and Petit Verdot that expresses the benefits of a moderate climate such as Tuscany's, where vines grow naturally without needing irrigation and yield an excellent quantity and quality of fruit. The resulting wine is a bold Super Tuscan that attests to the fact that French varietals can thrive in Tuscany and give exceptional quality, whilst retaining an undeniably Tuscan character.

Beautiful diversity, density in the nose: brambleberry, raspberry, flambéed cherries are tempered by scents of scrub oak hillside, wet nursery and sea side campfire. The palate starts lush with bright red berries and white pepper, leading to firm tannins and forward acidity-- excellent structure! The strength and grip of this bull is lifted by dark red, spicy fruits: plum, redcurrant, cherry cola. Bellisimo!

WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "A blend of Petit Verdot and Syrah, the 2016 Il Toro is a muscular animal that boldly exposes dark fruit, blackberry preserves, dried cherry, spice, leather and spicy cedar. The blend is unique because it pairs the volume and spicy intensity of Syrah with the density, darkness and structure of Petit Verdot. Softer aromas of sweet fruit cede quickly to tar, grilled herb and rich plum. Pair this wine with grilled T-bone steak. This is a bold and expressive wine that opens a new chapter for Filippo Chia and his talented team."

  14. CONTI 2016 "ORIGINI" VINO ROSSO DI ALTO CANTINE DEL CASTELLO

    Item #: i_305333
    Bottle Size: 750ml
The wine is a blend of Nebbiolo, Croatina, Vespolina, Barbera and other native varieties. The average age of the vines are 60 years CERTIFIED BIODYNAMIC.

ORIGINI is a fruity, mineral and spiced wine produced with the various grapes in the old vineyards grown according to the system called "Maggiorina".

This form of breeding, which has existed for centuries, is made up of three screws, supported by eight chestnut poles, which develop into four cardinal points. The architect Antonelli (designer of "Mole Antonelliana") perfected the bell of the supporting poles, obtaining a self-supporting structure that is more resistant to grain loads.

If the complete manual processing at all the phenological phases of the vineyard, after the 1950s, has led the peasants to abandon this type of breeding, in its recovery it is intended to preserve a significant part of the historic wine heritage of our territory.

  17. E. PIRA & FIGLI CHIARA BOSCHIS 2017 BARBERA D'ALBA

    Item #: i_302615
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    ORGANICALLY FARMED

This is a Barbera that drinks more like an "early drinking" Barolo. Sometimes Barbera veers towards heaviness with plummy, oaky notes. E Pira's bottling shows red cherry, strawberry, and raspberry that ripe and sensuous but complimented with a mix of floral notes that is unusual for the variety. Like her Dolcetto there is a level of acidity here that brings the wine into greater focus without sacrificing the fruit or the up-front pleasure.

Barolo is a place of peasants and royalty. The king of Savoy famously owned a prominent Barolo winery, but the most famous wines today come from old farming families working small plots of land. Chiara Boschis is part of the Borgogno clan who helped define the best of Barolo from the 1760s. Her father and two brothers ran the family winery leaving little place for Chiara. When the last heir of another Barolo farming family, E. Pira, suddenly passed away Chiara bought the historic brand and transformed it. Chiara’s innovations have largely been in the vineyard, reducing yields to focus flavors. During her second harvest at E. Pira in 1994, a concerned neighbor called Chiara’s father to inquire if he thought his daughter was totally nuts—she had simply dropped more crop at pruning than any of the Barolo old-timers had ever seen. Chiara’s methods are hands-on and intense, demanding a small production. She recently doubled the size of E. Pira—from 1,500 cases a year to nearly 3,000. Production on her signature wine, “Cannubi” Barolo is just 800cs.

    Item #: i_302978
    Bottle Size: 750ml

    ORGANICALLY FARMED

We know how much our customers are enamored like we are by the wines of Tuscany that, with their balance of fruit and savor, seem to evoke images of its gently rolling Mediterranean hills. And we're all about letting you know when there's a great value at hand! This time it's one of our past favorites, the "TORRIONE" from PETROLO in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. This is consistently a wine whose quality exceeds its sale price of $24.98, but the 2016 version puts an exclamation point on that!

Petrolo is headed by the charasmatic Luca Sanjust (proprietor and lead winemaker) who has turned a small family affair into an internationally recognized winery with hard work and a progressive mindset. He married the tried-and-true techniques of French winemaking with the traditions of Tuscany that go back to the ancient Etruscans. Step by step he's been returning the vineyards to their prime by halting the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and is well on the way to full organic practices.

The Petrolo 2016 "Torrione" is a sampling of vineyards from around the gorgeous estate; inspired by Bordeaux but tasting Tuscan, it's a carefully chosen blend of 75% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS - "Aromas of dried flowers, dried berries, cherries and hints of stones. Full-bodied, very firm and silky. An intense underlying energy of acidity and a lovely finish. 75% sangiovese, 20% merlot and 5% cabernet sauvignon. One of the best ever? Drink in 2020."

    Item #: i_301785
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 94
    ORGANICALLY FARMED

    100% Sangiovese

Over the years, the wines of Tuscan winery, Felsina, have been a staple at Hi-Time Wine Cellars by wowing us with their consistent quality across the range and vintages. Domenico Poggiali was taking a big risk starting the winery in 1966 when the market for serious Chianti was nowhere near what it is today, but that helped earn them a place at the top: building a reputation bit by bit over the decades, employing the highest quality of winemaking available even when it was uncertain that it would be profitable. It doesn't hurt that they ultimately employed one of the top Italian winemaking consultants, Franco Bernabei, who played a pivotal role in the Tuscan wine renaissance!

The Felsina lineup has been particularly strong in the beautiful back-to-back 2015 & 2016 vintages in Tuscany, and the reviews are proof. Our current lineup of 2016s share a common thread: intensity of flavors, a balance of muscle and elegance in a well-structured package. They are all made from 100% Sangiovese, organically farmed, and are made in a "modern" style, with a careful use of small French oak barrels.

WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "Streamlined and elegant, this mid-weight red trots out notes of grilled herb and dark fruit nuances that segue to spice, tilled earth and savory tobacco, with great complexity. This 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga is still a bit closed and tight, but this beautiful wine boasts all the best qualities of this vintage. It shows elegance and power, two contrasting characteristics that only work well together in the world's most achieved expressions. The most satisfying aspect of this Riserva is the crisp acidity on the close that keeps the palate refreshed and ready for the next sip."

More approachable in its youth, this spicy, mineral, dark-red-fruited Teroldego from Elisabetta Foradori comes from vines on alluvial gravel and sand deposits in the Rotaliano plain that is nestled between some dramatic mountains in the Adige Valley of Trentino. It's fermented in cement, then aged in a combination of larger oak barrels and cement.

Antonio Galloni of his publication “Vinous” writes of Elisabetta Foradori: “I was deeply struck with the wines I tasted at Foradori a few months ago. The winery is stripped down to the bare essentials, with terra cotta amphoras playing a greater role than in the past. Elisabetta Foradori is able to coax remarkable finesse from her Teroldego, the red grape that is native to this part of Trentino. The entry-level Foradori (previously labeled Teroldego Rotaliano) is fabulous and a great introduction to the estate... Readers should do whatever they can to check out these magnificent wines.”

WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "The 2018 Roero Arneis is a fragrant and linear white wine with plenty of spicy lemon, tangerine and crushed stone aromas. The 2017 vintage of this wine (from a hotter vintage) showed more tropical fruit, whereas this cooler vintage offers more citrus and mineral notes. Bruna Giacosa tells me that she prefers 2017 over this 2018; however, it's all a matter of personal choice. I am partial to this vintage because of those tangy flavors and the wine's precisely linear quality. However, this wine is set to flesh out and gain in volume after the summer because Arneis starts to show its best results in September following the harvest."
