    PRACTICING ORGANIC

    Nerello Mascalese & Cappuccio.

We are excited to offer you this Sicilian diamond in the rough from Calabretta. Everyone has heard of the wondrous southern Italian island of Sicily, with its rugged, exquisite black terrain housing Mt. Etna, the still quite active volcano. The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, all of the major wine publications (and the minor ones, too) have waxed poetic on the wild, raw beauty of this sunny island and their wines, with an emphasis lately on the indigenous grapes of Sicily: Nerello Mascalese - a sleek, graceful red (a grape reminiscent of Nebbiolo) and its huskier sibling Nerello Cappuccio.

The newly found fame of this viticultural area has given way for all the major players in the winebiz to settle here. While quietly, in the background is Calabretta, a winery founded in 1900, who keep on making wine just as they have done for generations. The winery is run by Massimo Calabretta and his son Massimiliano, farming approximately seven hectares of 70-80-year-old vines, many ungrafted planted on steep terraces. The Calabrettas are traditional producers, crafting their wines in a similar manner to Barolo, by long aging in massive neutral barrels (known as botti), and releasing them after extended ageing in the cellar. This is a costly service to the winemaker, a practice that is rarely done these days. The result is beautiful, and we are thankful for their effort.

In the glass, the wine is clear, medium garnet with a pinkish rim. The nose is intensely fruited and herbal with strong notes of cherries, orange peel, lavender, leather, rose petals, clove, and white truffle. The palate is equally swoon-worthy, with a Pinot Noir-like body and good acidity, sporting flavors of cherries, blackberries, cranberry, rhubarb, sage, walnut, tomato leaf and a hint of English Breakfast Tea on its fine tannins. This is a wine of tremendous character, something you could linger on and enjoy by just sniffing to uncover its many facets. We can't wait to try this wine with dishes such as osso bucco, duck, rabbit or veal.

What is the vintage of this wine? "Cala Cala" means "table wine" in Italian; and Calabretta's is a blend of four different wines of Etna Rosso. 2009 (2 different wines), 2005 and 2008... so 4 wines together! This is an exceptional buy, and something every lover of traditionally styled wines must try.

  4. CANALICCHIO DI SOPRA 2015 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

    Item #: i_303003
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 95
    James Suckling: 97
JAMES SUCKLING 97 POINTS - "Ripe berry and cherry aromas with hints of spices and cedar. Dried flowers, too. Full-bodied, dense and layered. Fantastic richness and depth. Long, long finish. Best ever."

WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "This bottle marks the special 50th anniversary of this wine. A little red sticker on the front label commemorates the five decades that have passed since grandfather Primo Pacenti did his first harvest. The medium-weight Canalicchio di Sopra 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a generous spread of forest fruit, licorice, blue flower, bay leaf, Provence herbs and fragrant wet soil aromas. There is a touch of earthy muskiness that some like to refer to as "foxy." Fruit for this Brunello represents a selection of clusters harvested over 10 hectares at 300 to 320 meters above sea level in two sites: Canalicchio and Montosoli. Canalicchio has clay soils for the structure of the wine, and Montosoli adds to the clarity of the aromas. All the vines are over 10 years old. Fermentation is in stainless steel, and aging spans 36 months in Slavonian oak casks. This wine from the warm and sunny 2015 vintage maintains its trademark crispness and freshness nonetheless."

  5. CANALICCHIO DI SOPRA 2017 ROSSO DI MONTALCINO

    Wine Advocate: 91
WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "Canalicchio di Sopra pays special attention to its lower-end wines. I always like to point this out to readers in the search for great value from Tuscany. The 2017 Rosso di Montalcino is an immediate and enticing expression with soft layers of ripe cherry and black fruit. The wine is soft and velvety in texture with easy endnotes of cherry confit and crème de cassis. This is a great food wine. Some 25,675 bottles and 762 magnums were made."

  6. CANALICCHIO SOPRA 2015 "CASACCIA" BRUNELLO

    Item #: i_303033
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 98
    James Suckling: 100
2015 was the first bottling based on the "Casaccia" vineyard.

JAMES SCUKLING 100 POINTS - "The intensity of fruit is staggering here, as this stacks up dried peaches, dried strawberries, red licorice, red-plum compote and glazed red cherries, in rapid succession. There’s a breadth of flavor to the palate that will take your breath away; muscular tannins draw in deeply set cherries, melding it together in a glistening coating of acidity, which only helps to carry it longer still. The finish is nearly endless. A stunning new single vineyard from Canalicchio di Sopra. Drink in 2026."

WINE ADVOCATE 98 POINTS - "The Canalicchio di Sopra 2015 Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia represents a new chapter in this estate's long history. This is a single-vineyard expression from the Canalicchio area, one of the most interesting subzones on the northeast side of Montalcino. Giving identity to individual parcels gives an estate like this huge potential for further expression and experimentation. The site is a little over two hectares, and it has dense, mineral-rich clay soils that add more power and a heavier center of gravity. The vines were planted in 1990. I notice slightly firmer tannin here, with a very distinct level of acidity purity. You also get lasting berry fruit favors with blueberry and dried raspberry followed by spice, licorice and lavender buds from the south of France and the rim of the Mediterranean. The wine is distinguished by endnotes of balsam or medicinal herb that grow in strength with time. It offers plenty of volume and weight."

    Item #: i_305366
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    CERTIFIED BIODYNAMIC

    100% Aglianico

Cantine del Notaio is a Demeter certified Biodynamic estate located in the rugged volcanic hills of Mount Vulture in Basilicata. Gerardo Giuratabocchetti embraces a passion for Aglianico that has been passed down through his family for generations. He and his wife, Marcella, also share a respect for nature and the environment, and the intrinsic vitality of their soil, which has ultimately taken them down the path to Biodynamic farming, which they feel brings forth the potential of Aglianico and wines of extraordinary potential.
The l’Atto Aglianico comes from a relatively earlier harvest of younger vines and aged in well-seasoned (past 5th year) oak. It's darkly colored in the glass with a savory perfume of minty red and black forest berries and damp earth. Robust and well structured in the mouth, with layered complexity and hearty tannins and a good chewy texture that carries the fruit into the finish. This is a wine for rich autumnal and wintery slow cooked dishes, as well as for pasta dishes with hearty sauce and strong cheese.

As a varietal, the delicate and above all mineral Pinot Bianco, is a hallmark of the winery. On the nose this classic Pinot Bianco scores with crisp notes of pear mingling with aromas of raspberry and lime, plus a touch of camomile and lemon grass to round off the composition. Body and balance sum up the Pinot Bianco, which intrigues the palate with the fruit of the pear and quince aromas combined with a salty minerality. 12. CAPANNA 2013 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO RISERVA

    Item #: i_303332
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 95
WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a beautiful creation that excels both in terms of intensity and complexity. The bouquet is profound and multilayered with thin and delicate layers of fruit that peel back with individual precision and personality. Ripe cherry fruit is carefully balanced against spice, tar and smoke. The wine also offers pretty details of crushed rock and dried garden herb. There's a lot to keep your attention and win your affections."

VINOUS MEDIA 94 + POINTS - "Perfumed red cherry, raspberry, sandalwood, flint and botanical herbs on the deep, perfumed nose. Then multilayered and dense, with complex and precise flavors of red fruits, balsamic oils and licorice, complicated by Indian spices. Finishes long, suave and mineral. An outstanding Riserva that, as usual in Capanna’s style, is not a super-fleshy, muscular body-builder type, but plays its cards on the side of penetrance and refinement." - Ian D'Agata. Drink from 2022.

DECANTER - "Capanna's Riserva is a selection of the best bunches throughout their 12ha of vines on the Montosoli hill, which usually corresponds to the oldest vines on the steepest sites...The nose is very lifted and high-toned, with intense tarragon, orange and strawberry notes." Drink from 2021.

WINE ENTHUSIAST - "Fragrant purple-flower, exotic spice, leather and plum aromas mingle together. The firmly structured palate shows Marasca cherry, cranberry, licorice and tobacco framed in tightly knit fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Give it time to unwind and fully develop."

If you haven't heard anything about the 2015 vintage in Italy's Brunello di Montalcino region then you've done a pretty exceptional job of quarantining. Needless to say the wines are the stuff of legend. The vintage has been given a perfect grade by many different publications and it's release was as highly anticipated as any we've seen in the last decade.

Now let's talk about Capanna. Capanna has been around since the beginnings of the appellation of Brunello di Montalcino. They are one of the original 7 wineries that founded the Consorzia (The governing body for the region). They also are located in what is widely considered to be Montalcino's grand cru, the area known as Montosoli. You combine that quality of terroir with their strictly traditional methods of winemaking and attention to detail; and it makes for some of the purest most mouth wateringly delicious Sangiovese in Italy. Capanna has the street credit to back it up as well with the 2015 Brunello getting a 95 point score from Antonio Galloni's Vinous.

Capanna's Brunello strictly adheres to the standards required for the Brunello di Montalcino appellation. It spends 3 years in large Slavonian oak casks and then isn't released until January 1st of the 5th year after harvest. Once again through these strict methods combined with the incredible quality of fruit from their vineyards you get the absolute pinnacle of Sangiovese. A wine that while stunningly delicious now will continue to improve for decades to come.

JAMES SUCKLING 96 POINTS - "Plums and dried flowers with violets and lavender and hints of sandalwood. Full-bodied, dense and fruity with a big and juicy palate, yet the round and firm tannins hold it all together and give it form. Drink after 2021."

ANTONIO GALLONI; VINOUS 95 POINTS - "Bright deep red. Musky, bracing aromas and flavors of red cherry and orange peel, tarragon and violet. Full and tactile, with racy acidity giving the wine’s deep flavors real cut and grip. Finishes with lingering saline nuances on the clean, refined back end. A rather uncompromising style of Brunello, but very true to type; this will also age extremely well. Capanna has always made excellent solid, traditional Brunellos, but it strikes me as being an estate on a real roll of late."

Something else from Capanna that you might be interested in is their Rosso di Montalcino. If you haven't heard of Rosso di Montalcino, AKA "Baby Brunello", then you have been missing out. It is an Italian wine lover's best friend but also their most closely guarded secret. It is the same fruit that goes into the legendary wines of Brunello di Montalcino but with less strict ageing requirements. So you get to enjoy it sooner while you wait for your Brunello's to mature. Capanna's rosso is absolute magic in a bottle. It is so fresh and delicious. In fact it basically is the perfect example of the term "Baby Brunello" as the fruit is of the same quality that goes into Capanna's heralded Brunello and it is aged in wood for almost as long. (A full 18 months. Brunello requires 24 months) This wine is an absolute steal for the price and certainly wont last long especially with the 93 point score from Antonio Galloni's Vinous. This is a serious deal that should be taken advantage of.

ANTONIO GALLONI; VINOUS 93 POINTS - "Lively medium red. Pure, very refreshing aromas and flavors of raspberry, licorice and violet on the drop-dead gorgeous nose. Then sweet and pliant, boasting delightful energy and balance, with the red fruits and subtle herbal notes conveying a distinct coolness on the mineral, vibrant and very long finish. A real essence of Sangiovese, this is an absolutely splendid Rosso di Montalcino. Well done." Ian D'Agata

  15. CAPARZO 2015 'LA CASA' BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

    Item #: i_305074
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 95
    James Suckling: 97
We just received an allocation of the 2015 Caparzo La Casa Brunello di Montalcino. We are excited to offer this stunning wine. Only the best barrels are selected for Caparzo's single vineyard La Casa designated wine with the remainder finding its way into their "normale" Brunello. The 5 hectare La Casa vineyard is recognized as a vineyard which consistently produces exceptional wine. It is perfectly situated on Montosoli Hill where it enjoys a south/southeast exposure and excellent sunshine. With an elevation of 900 feet, the vineyard is shielded from mist and frosts and boasts well-draining soils. In sum, this vineyard has it all.

This brilliant Brunello di Montalcino from Caparzo showcases the best qualities of the vintage with exquisite balance, dazzling aromatics and amazing complexity. Enjoy now with a nice decant or put some away to appreciate the increased complexity as the wine evolves over time.

JAMES SUCKLING 97 POINTS - "Beautiful combination here of balanced orange and lemon rind and riper glazed cherries, terracotta and scorched earth. Mushroom too. Tightly wound and elegant with a persistent core of mineral acidity and finely wrapped-up tannins. Drink in 2021."

WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "Caparzo's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa opens to a very fine and precise bouquet that is carefully assembled with crisp berry notes, smoke, tar, licorice and toasted almond. The wine remains very tight and crisp overall, but it does cede to more volume and puts on more weight as it opens in the glass. There is a pretty note of crushed stone or granite on the close. The La Casa vineyard site is characterized by clay soils broken up with shards of Galestro schist that adds to the cool and fresh profile of the wine. This lovely single-vineyard Brunello is almost ready to drink (wait a few more years), but it should also withstand the next 10 years of cellar aging should you decide to put your bottle aside. Some 15,000 bottles were produced. The wine was bottled in August 2019 and released in January 2020." (ML)

    James Suckling: 95
Every once in a while, a wine walks through the door (not literally, but you get the idea...) and just blows the room away. This is definitely one of those wines. Our Italian Wine Buyer, Patty Quick, believes this is the best Brunello she's ever had in terms of quality-to-price ratio. The juice is outstanding, the price reasonable and the critics are effusive in their praise— creating a fortuitous trifecta for those with access to it. This wine won't last so move quickly!

JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS - "Plum and ripe-berry with cedar and fresh-mushroom aromas and flavors. Full body, round and juicy tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Hints of chocolate. Shows intensity and focus. Drink or hold."

WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "Caparzo is one of two properties in Montalcino owned by the beautiful and charming Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini. The other property is Altesino. This wine, the Caparzo 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is a very classic interpretation that delivers the goods without any distracting bells or whistles. The wine opens to red and purple fruit aromas with background tones of dried herb, potting soil, cedar wood and light spice. Fruit comes from a site with heavier clay soils, and you get hints of that extra density and richness here. This vintage offers all you need in a model Brunello from a very beautiful and generous vintage. I always admire the wines of Caparzo for their accessible and immediate drinking style. Some 160,000 bottles were corked in August 2019, and the wine hit the market in January 2020."

About the Winery - Caparzo, with owner Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini and winemaker Massimo Bracalente, aims to make top quality products using meticulous and traditional techniques, while at the same time applying a modern outlook in its commercial relations with efficiency and capability. More than thirty years have passed since the first vines were planted and the first steps in winemaking taken. In this period, Caparzo, bolstered by its background in the Brunello tradition and the different terroirs of the area, has proved its ability to produce wines with a creative flair and spirit of innovation that achieves top standards in quality. This explains why Caparzo wines have been chosen by the most famous restaurants in the world and are served at international meetings and official State banquets.

  18. CARAVAGLIO INFATATA 2018 MALVASIA SECCA

    Item #: i_302935
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    ORGANICALLY FARMED

Although Nino Caravaglio “officially” founded his cantina in 1992, his family has cultivated vines and other crops on the island since the 16th century. His vineyards have been certified organic almost since the winery’s creation, with 37 acres on Salina. The island’s arid climate and cleansing breezes make Caravaglio’s commitment to natural farming that much easier; mold and disease resistance are not big issues here, and the exceedingly good health and cleanliness of the fruit enables Caravaglio to keep added sulfites to the barest minimum.

This bottling, aptly named “Infatata” (“enchanted”), includes an image on its label of a single, triangle-shaped vineyard, called ‘Tricoli,’ which climbs up the side of an ancient volcano. The grapes from this site are hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard, then fermented on indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. It spends just three months resting in tank before bottling, and here we are—a bright, floral, saline white that hints at both Spanish Albariño and French Muscadet but adds an extra layer of intrigue. Malvasia Bianca has a more floral, tropical aromatic profile and a slightly waxy texture reminiscent of some northern Rhône whites, and this Salina-grown interpretation brings all of that to the table along with a pronounced sea-air salinity. In the glass, it’s a deep yellow-gold, with aromas of orange blossom, acacia honey, white peach, preserved lemon, green herbs, and caper brine.

With the 2015 Great Vintage that just arrived, we are excited to share with you another great showing of Casanova di Neri Brunello! And with the press of this vintage just ramping up, we suggest you get enough to put a few away!

WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "The Neri family has created a classic expression of Sangiovese from a classic vintage, while remaining faithful to the house style. In a nutshell, these wines always tend to offer dark plum, clove and fig confit over the tiny berry and blue flower aromas you get from the traditionalists. That said, this Brunello needs ample time to open, and I suggest you splash it into the decanter. The Casanova di Neri 2015 Brunello di Montalcino (this is the one with the white label) stays safely within your expectation of the vintage with its variety-driven aromas of wild berry, licorice, blue flower and balsam herb. This wine sees fruit sourced from a vineyard on the northeast side of Montalcino, with Galestro soils ranging from 330 to 480 meters above sea level. Some 95,376 bottles were made. It was bottled in June 2019, and it hit the market in January 2020. You might want more from the aromatics (while you wait for the bouquet to come around), but this wine goes gangbusters in terms of mid-palate and overall texture."

ANTONIO GALLONI; VINOUS 94 POINTS - "Good deep red. Saline aromas and flavors of red cherry, blueberries, herbs, blood orange and sweet spices. Smooth and long on the bright, very sweet finish. Really quite good."

DECANTER 94 POINTS - "The Casanova di Neri estate is located in the northeastern zone of Torrenieri. Besides five distinct sites there, the Neri family also has three vineyards in the south between the villages of Sant'Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The 'white label' as this Brunello is called blends plots from the cooler Torrenieri area. It is mid-weight and classy, offering gleaming bright, fresh red cherry flavours. Hints of rust and warm stone as well as subtle sweet spice add complexity. Tactile but fine sandy tannins give appropriate support and the finish is vibrant and perfumed."

JAMES SUCKLING 94 POINTS - "There’s beauty and drinkability to this wine that really is enticing with blueberry and cherry aromas, as well as hints of hot stone and licorice. Medium to full body, integrated tannins and a fresh and polished finish. Shows focus and brightness. Very drinkable now, but better in a year or two. Try in 2021."

  22. CASANOVA DI NERI 2015 TENUTA NUOVA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

    Item #: i_305898
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 98+
    James Suckling: 99
WINE ADVOCATE 98+ POINTS - "Giacomo Neri and his family have crafted a wine that impresses from the first sip forward (especially when the wine is given ample time to open). The Casanova di Neri 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova must be treated with patience, and that patience is returned with many great rewards. Blackberry, plum and summer cherry are slowly folded into lasting flavors of spice, leather and beautiful balsam or medical herb. These are always a distinctive signature of this estate. The aromas flow with seamless transitions, and that fluid and ever-changing nature of the bouquet is what helps to build intensity and staying power. Fruit is harvested from a south- and southeast-facing slope at 250 to 300 meters above sea level. The soils are mixed loosely with crushed rock, allowing access to air and moisture. Indeed, pretty mineral accents appear as the wine takes on more air in the glass. What stands out most in this Brunello is the quality of the bouquet that is rigid and firm, yet not excessively so. You feel the structural texture of the wine as it sits firmly over the palate, yet there is mobility and softness to its many moving parts. I tasted this wine at various intervals over a 24-hour period. Tenuta Nuova was bottled in June 2018, and some 70,032 bottles were released." - Monica Larner (31st Jan 2020)

JAMES SUCKLING 99 POINTS - "The purity of fruit in this wine really strikes you with black cherries, combined with sage, lavender and rosemary. Extremely aromatic. Full-bodied, yet so tight and polished with incredible tannin structure that gives the wine an endless mouth feel of caressing tannins, acidity and fruit. There’s a fabulous saltiness and oyster-shell undertone to the fruit. Unique. Drinkable already, but this year there’s the structure to last decades."

  24. CASATO VOLIERO 2015 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

    Item #: i_303324
    Bottle Size: 750ml
    Wine Advocate: 94
    James Suckling: 95
JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS - "Here's a confident and genuine expression of Sangiovese that manages to be both accessible and complicated at the same time. Brunello is one of the few Italian wines to bridge the gap between those two extremes. The Voliero 2015 Brunello di Montalcino offers a steady stream of small berry fruit and cherry aromas. But there is width to this bouquet and deeper layers of spice, tar and licorice also play important roles."

From the producer of Uccelliera comes a 2nd expression of Montalcino!
"The vineyards [for Voliero] located in both the higher elevation areas of Castelnuovo dell’Abate and Sant’Angelo in Colle. Andrea describes the differences between his two labels eloquently: Uccelliera is a single subzone wine, and reflects the very specific and determined characteristics of Castelnuovo: power, fruit, and profundity. Uccelliera’s vineyards are near Ciacci’s Pianrosso (about 150 meters above sea level), and reflect the warmth of the area, the flavor profile showing chocolate, leather and “amarena”—sour cherry. Voliero comes from vineyards 200 meters higher in elevation than Uccelliera, and gives the idea of the classic blend of Montalcino Brunello. It combines two high altitude vineyards of Castelnuovo and Sant’Angelo, and plays on the elegance, finesse and brightness that its elevation imparts."
