Just a huge, rich, unctuous wine, it offers everything you could want from Grenache and is certainly going to challenge the 2007 and 2010 as the greatest expression of this terroir to date. "
WINE ADVOCATE 95-97 POINTS - "Tasted from a single foudre representing the La Crau Est lieu-dit, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin comes across as even richer and creamier than the 2015, yet with brighter acids and similar spice. Red fruit lingers, morphing toward chocolate as the finish goes on and on. Christophe Sabon describes the 2015s as well balanced and says, "They're not as intense as '16 or '10, but very interesting." He says he's aiming to achieve balance between power, elegance and ripe tannins. For me, the 2015s fit these criteria well at this estate. He adds, "To keep Grenache alone, you must be on sandy soils." Those, of course, are the basis for the family's Cuvée Chaupin and their new Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Clos Saint Antontin."

It shows amazingly fresh, floral notes, bright strawberry and raspberry fruit, matched by full body, ample richness and length."
JEB DUNNUCK 93-95 POINTS - "The 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape won’t match the 2016, yet nevertheless, it’s a beautiful, elegant, classic wine. Garrigue, pepper, assorted dark fruits, and lavender notes all emerge from this balanced, medium to full-bodied effort that shines for its purity and elegance. It will come into its own with just short-term cellaring and keep for 10-15 years. Domaine Vieux Donjon is another reference point estate for classic, traditionally made Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These rich, powerful wines are simply loaded with Provençal aromas and flavors of meaty black fruits, spice, and garrigue. Traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape rarely gets better."

Does Syrah from the Northern Rhone get much better than this? Perhaps if you spend hundreds of dollars, but at this price-point it's tough to beat. Jaboulet's 2015 Domaine de Thalabert comes from an historic vineyard considered the benchmark for Crozes-Hermitage and produces exceptional Syrah. In tasting this wine, we were struck by the concentration of fruit and excellent mid-palate depth of the dark fruit flavors. Jeb Dunnuck also loved this wine and gave it a score of 97 Points, calling it "full-bodied, gorgeously textured and seamless."
This wine comes from the oldest vineyard in the appellation of Crozes Hermitage and is located in the shadow of the great Hermitage Hill. It also happens to be the first vineyard ever owned by Paul Jaboulet and was purchased in 1834. We had the pleasure of walking this vineyard last year and saw firsthand why this is such a revered site. Here the vines are grown on pebbly terraces that are glacial in origin, with the bedrock close to the topsoil. These small, round pebbles store heat during the day and release it at night, providing optimum ripening.
The Frey family purchased Jaboulet more than a decade ago and has spared no expense in its effort to demonstrate the pedigree their vineyards possess. This coupled with what is being called one of the greatest growing seasons in the history of the Northern Rhone has given rise to a tremendous wine.
The 2015 Jaboulet Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert is undoubtedly one of the finest wines ever produced from this historic vineyard. It is a tremendous effort which can be enjoyed now, but will also reward those who wish to put a few bottles away for later. Enjoy!

Blackcurrants, olive tapenade, truffles and earthy notes all emerge from this full-bodied, gorgeously textured and seamless 2015. With fine tannin and no hard edge, it can be drunk today or cellaring for 15-20 years."

Black, black fruits, full body, a layered, rich, opulent texture, and building tannin make for one seriously impressive Côte Rôtie that needs to be forgotten for 5-7 years. It will last for 2-3 decades. The son of René, Pierre Rostaing, is now taking a more leading role in this terrific estate.
