CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world's most widely recognized red wine grape varieties. It is grown in nearly every major wine producing country among a diverse spectrum of climates from Canada's Okanagan Valley to Lebanon's Beqaa Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon became internationally recognized through its prominence in Bordeaux wines where it is often blended with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. From France, the grape spread across Europe and to the New World where it found new homes in places like California's Santa Cruz Mountains, Napa Valley, New Zealand's Hawkes Bay, Australia's Margaret River and Coonawarra regions and Chile's Maipo Valley and Colchagua. The classic profile of Cabernet Sauvignon tends to be full-bodied wines with high tannins and noticeable acidity that contributes to the wine's aging potential. In cooler climates, Cabernet Sauvignon tends to produce wines with blackcurrant notes that can be accompanied by green bell pepper notes, mint and cedar which will all become more pronounced as the wine ages. In more moderate climates the blackcurrant notes are often seen with black cherry and black olives notes while in very hot climates the current flavors can veer towards the over-ripe and "jammy" side.

Grapes were sourced from vineyards throughout Washington state, including the Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley and the Wahluke Slope. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah & Petit Verdot were added to create a fruit-forward profile and enhanced mouth feel. The wine was aged for 12 months in a combination of American and French oak barrels to build structure and complexity in the blend. This Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, juicy red that features aromas of dark cherry, black currants, coffee, and subtle hints of spice. These flavors are complemented by a touch of spicy oak and emphasized by refined tannins.

A blend of vineyards from Lake and Napa Counties. We find these diverse, high quality vineyards to compliment one another perfectly. Our high altitude rocky vineyard sites in Lake County deliver angularity, complexity and austerity while our Napa Valley fruit provides deep concentration and focus. This wine is dense and tremendously focused, with a wonderful nose and palate of cedar, blueberry, saddle leather and white pepper. The finish showcases a perfect balance of acid, tannin and sweet toasted oak. Meticulous, detail oriented winemaking and complete attention to detail has produced a wine of tremendous presence and complexity that must be tasted to be believed.

ROBERT PARKER 95 POINTS - "From the back hills of St. Helena, in the direction of Spring Mountain, comes Abreu's first single-vineyard offering from vineyards planted in 1982, the Madrona Ranch. This cuvee usually contains at least 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and one of the highest percentages of Cabernet Franc, ranging from 33% to 45%. Tiny quantities of Petit Verdot and Merlot are also added, depending on how they fared in any given vintage. Last year I mentioned that the 2011 Proprietary Red Madrona Ranch was one of the rare Abreu wines that showed a little herbaceousness, but that has completely aged out. There is now a forest floor intensity to this full-bodied, opaque purple-colored 2011. After spending 26 months in 100% new oak, it exhibits great fruit, concentration and intensity. The fact that Abreu and Grimes do malolactic in their new oak barrels seems to integrate the wood better than at many wineries. It is certainly a key to understanding the wine's complexity. It displays lots of Christmas fruitcake, coffee, chocolate and spice box notes, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and sweet tannin. Drink it over the next 15+ years."

ANTONIO GALLONI 95 POINTS - "Abreu's 2011 Madrona Ranch possesses remarkable textural depth and richness, especially for the year. Rich, layered and super-expressive, the 2011 graces the palate with a compelling interplay of bright fruit, expressive aromatics and lovely breadth. New leather, crushed flowers and mint add nuance on the close."

This wine combines the best attributes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Malbec from the Oakville and Yountville areas of Napa Valley. It possesses a vibrant, pomegranate hued, deep garnet color with a nose that reveals a panoply of aromas: blueberry liquor, dark red fruits, black cherry, with subtle notes of baking spices and cedar. A small percentage of beautifully ripe Malbec and Petite Verdot contribute hints of plum and leather respectively. These abundant fruit characteristics, along with a touch of vanilla, reveal themselves in the mouth with multiple layers of flavor that coat the mouth and continue to a long finish. The tannins are superfine and silky, carrying the fruit along the palate from entry to finish without ever being obtrusive. Both the Malbec and Petite Verdot further enhance the classical texture.

Adelaida's distinct family owned vineyards lie in the craggy hillside terrain of Paso Robles' Adelaida District, 14 miles from the Pacific coast. Ranging from 1400 – 2000 feet in elevation these low yielding vines are chal-lenged by chalky limestone soils and afternoon blasts of cool marine air, and a diurnal temperature swing of 40-50 degrees.

Viking is an example of mountain terroir bringing special qualities to a wine. This Bordeaux style blend is all about elevation and its extreme site. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates but the influence of the supporting cast makes this an ensemble effort. Different than valley floor vineyards, the elevation effect promotes UV exposure and a warm to cool tempera-ture variation. Slope and poor chalk-rock soils contribute to vine stress.

A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 16% Malbec, and 8% Petit Verdot, the wine's youth and moderate grip relaxes with aeration revealing classic aromatics of violets, black currants, cranberry and blue fruit plus hints of graphite and cedar spice. Best decanted in the near term, drink through 2025.

This is 100% estate Cabernet Sauvignon made by Dave Phinney (Orin Swift, GKG, Stanton, Locations). The vineyard is located in the Silverado Bench at an elevation of roughly 200 feet above the valley floor, immediately South and East of the Oak Knoll AVA. It consists of just over fifteen acres, with eight acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and a third of an acre of Petit Verdot. Its location means it is subject to the temperature moderating influence of the San Pablo Bay, resulting in a long growing season with good balance between fruit and acid.

The 2013 Aftermath Cabernet Sauvignon offers savory aromas of herbs de Provence and thyme intermingled with fresh dark fruits of blackberry and cassis. The wine is ripe and open, with hints of oak and cedar carrying through to layers of dark fruit and a touch of black olive on the rich, layered palate. Full-bodied , with supple tannins, it deftly balances fruit and structure to express the property's rocky hillside terroir.

There are aromas of dark fruit, blackberry, cherry, cassis, plum, vanilla and a slight cocoa and chocolate note. In the glass there are rich flavors of plum, cherry, cassis, blackberry, spice and chocolate. This is a smooth wine with medium body, nice balance and a long finish.

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - "Alpha Omega's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is simply fabulous. Ripe, opulent and totally seductive, the 2013 hits the palate with a rush of aromas and flavors and never lets up. Dark red cherry, pomegranate, spice and mint abound in a fleshy, succulent Cabernet Sauvignon endowed with tons of near term appeal."

ROBERT PARKER 91 POINTS - "The series of outstanding Cabernets from Alpha Omega starts with their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, which offers plenty of blueberry and blackberry fruit, some creosote and charcoal, and a touch of background, toasty oak in a full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and pure style. It should drink nicely for 12-15 years. A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot and the rest Merlot is the 2013 Proprietary Red wine, which is all sourced from Napa. Again, terrific up-front fruit – blueberries, blackberries and cassis – an opaque purple color, and hints of cedar wood, forest floor and incense are all present in this multi-layered, rich, concentrated wine, which should also drink well for 12-15 years."

ROBERT PARKER 95 POINTS - "Alpha Omega's 2013 ERA is a selection of the best lots from all of their single vineyards, and even though it is a proprietary red, this version is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc. The wine is tightly coiled, very reserved, with relatively high tannin, but a saturated purple color, and shows notes of charcoal, incense, white flowers and black and blue fruits. It's all there, but this wine begs for 5-8 years of bottle age before consumption. It should last for 25-30 years as well."

ROBERT PARKER 98 POINTS - "The winemaker behind the Anakota high-elevation mountain vineyard sites in Knights Valley is no other than Pierre Seillan, the Bordelais guru who makes the fabulous wines of Verite from the same proprietor, the Jackson family. There are two cuvees from various elevations in Knights Valley, the lower elevation called Helena Montana and the higher site, the Helena Dakota. Production of these cuvees ranges from the smallest in 2013, with just over 500 cases of each produced, jumping to 700-800 in 2014 and a whopping 1,000-1,300 in 2012 – the most generous of the three vintages. These are all 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% French oak and are meant for long, long-term aging. I would suggest that these may be, potentially, the longest-lived wines being made in Knights Valley, even exceeding the potential age-worthiness of the Peter Michael Les Pavots cuvees that are made in this microclimate on the Sonoma side, but near the Napa County line."

"The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Dakota (445 cases) is absolutely magnificent. Opaque black/purple in color, it comes across like a Chateau Montrose from a great vintage – a very earthy St.-Estephe-inspired wine with the essence of loamy soil and crushed rocks interwoven with blackberry and cassis fruit. Some oak makes an appearance, but it is pushed to the background by the extravagance and enormous body and extract of this wine of phenomenal intensity. This is a classic Pierre Seillan style of wine meant for 25-40 years of cellaring."

ANTONIO GALLONI'S VINOUS MEDIA 91 POINTS - "Inky purple. Aromas of cassis, blueberry and exotic Indian spices take on a hint of vanilla as the wine opens up. Sweet and expressive on the palate, offering an array of dark fruit flavors that show very good energy and a subtle smoky overtone. Shows impressive clarity and lift on the very long, gently tannic finish, which hangs on with fruit- and spice-driven tenacity."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "Giving up classic Cab notes of creme de cassis, licorice, leafy herbs and graphite, the 2013 Oyster Ridge Margarita Vineyard is medium to full-bodied, polished and pure, with fine tannin, good mid-palate depth and excellent overall purity and elegance. Drink it over the coming decade."

The Ancient Peaks Cabernet Sauvignon comes blocks planted where the sloping terrain straddles rocky sedimentary and shale soils. These soils promote naturally low vigor for the development of intensely flavored fruit. Cold soaked for 48 hours prior to fermentation for a gentle extraction of color and flavor, the wine was racked to a combination of French and American oak barrels, where it aged for 18 months prior to blending and bottling. Small lots of Malbec and Syrah were incorporated into the final blend for added dimension.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon offers warm aromas of blueberry, plum and toasted oak along with classic varietal notes of graphite and black olive. The texture is plump and juicy, cascading across the palate with flavors of black currant and fresh red berries accentuated by hints of roast coffee, anise, tobacco and mineral. Sleek acidity paves the way for an elegant finish framed by smooth tannins.

Nestled high upon Atlas Peak, in the eastern mountains of the Napa Valley lies a majestic property, owned by one of the "royal families" of winemaking; this property is Antica. The name Antica is a combination of the last name Antinori and California, and represents the Antinori family's longstanding desire to craft exceptional estate wines that are a true expression of Napa Valley terroir.

The Antinori family's winemaking history has been synonymous with the famed wine growing regions of Tuscany and Umbria since its inception more than 600 years ago. The Antinori think beyond a single vintage, and instead, think long term when making decisions that will impact the finished wines. Marchese Piero Antinori first visited and fell in love with Napa Valley in 1966, after which he dreamt of producing an Antinori Napa Valley wine. In the mid-1980s, the opportunity presented itself; a 1,200-acre estate on a high plain, in the eastern mountains of Napa Valley. Antinori knew that the property's Atlas Peak location had great potential for growing quality wine grapes, so the family took part in developing the property.

Situated above the fog line, the Antica estate offers a mix of steep, rocky soils in its higher elevations and loamy, well-drained soils in the lower ones. There are more than 50 blocks within the estate, a true patchwork quilt that takes advantage of the variations in soil, elevation, and exposure to best match varietal, rootstock, and clone to attain the ideal expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. The high altitude (1,800 feet) means cooler daytime temperatures, which provides a long growing season, and gives the grapes complexity, enhanced textures, and dark colors. The steep, rocky and well-drained soils result into low yields (three pounds) per vine, but the fully ripened grapes show great structure with concentrated fruit, and focused and persistent flavors. Tannins are ripe, balanced, and integrated.

ROBERT PARKER 94 POINTS - "A beautifully elegant, stylish Cabernet Sauvignon from the Antinori outpost in Napa Valley, their 2013 has a dense ruby/purple color, a beautiful, sweet kiss of pure blackcurrant fruit, licorice and forest floor. Full-bodied, but with creamy texture, sweet, beautifully integrated acidity, tannin and alcohol, this is an impressively well-crafted wine that’s drinkable now, but should evolve nicely for another 15-20 years."

Arkenstone sits on a rocky and rugged slope high atop Howell Mountain, looking down into the Napa Valley. The vineyards change in elevation to the tune of 250 feet, and the soils are a mix of Tufa, iron rich red clay, and abundant rocky areas. Even though proprietors Ron and Susan Krausz planted their first vines on the property in 1998, it wasn't until several years later that their first "true" vintage was bottled.

With the help of the talented and famous winemaker Philippe Melka, Ron and Susan tasted many wines and blends from their property for many years. Each year, they listened to which techniques in the vineyard translated to better wine. Again, each year, they fine-tuned these practices until they were sure the vineyard was well-established, trained properly, and were producing world-class wines.

Enter Sam Kaplan; Arkenstone Vineyard Manager and Winemaker since their commercial release. Sam has, since day one at Arkenstone, farmed the vineyards organically. Sam is exceptionally knowledgeable, and not only uses Arkenstone's state-of-the-art winemaking facility to its fullest, but he also knows when to be "hands off", and let the vineyard's own characteristics shine; terroir, if you will.

The Arkenstone Obsidian consists entirely of fruit from their Howell Mountain Estate ranging from 1400’ to 1650’ on the western shoulder of the mountain. Each year the blend is comprised of the top performing blocks from 16 of theirr 22 blocks dedicated to the Obsidian. By having complete control over the vineyard Arkenstone is able to begin to shape the wines while on the vine. Once picked, they process all of the fruit at Arkenstone where the grapes are sorted and fed by gravity down into the fermentation hall. As the grapes come in, all lots are kept separate to ferment and age individually. Once the wines have aged about 11 months in barrel by lot, winemaker Sam Kaplan will begin to make the blend. Once blended, the wine will go back into barrel for an additional 11 months and then into bottle for an additional year before release.

ROBERT PARKER 97 POINTS - "The two blockbusters are proprietary reds, although certainly dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2012 Obsidian Proprietary Red is a 580-case blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot. A complex nose of spring flowers, white chocolate, black cherry and cassis as well as touches of blackberry and espresso is followed by a multi-layered wine with stunning concentration, seductive and sexy notes of low acidity, plenty of glycerin and sweet tannin. This is a full-bodied beauty that was aged 22 months in 100% French oak."

Arrow & Branch proprietors Steve and Seanne Contursi share a great love for the wines of Bordeaux, particularly those produced with a large quantity of Cabernet Franc, such as Chateau Cheval Blanc. The couple began their romance while traveling through Bordeaux in the mid 1980's, and have since found their dreams come true in being able to live and make wine in Napa Valley. They sought out their Coombsville vineyard property with an eye to producing top-quality Bordeaux blend wines from Napa Valley. This property is organically farmed.

One of the rising stars of Napa Valley winemaking, Jennifer Williams, was named Winemaker for Arrow & Branch in April 2011. After years of working with and learning from legendary winemakers such as Rosemary Cakebread, Francoise Peschon, and the Novak family, Jennifer now brings her outstanding talents and experience to Arrow & Branch. In 2002, Williams joined Araujo and Spottswoode as a harvest intern, splitting her time between these two great winemaking estates. At Spottswoode, Jennifer was drawn to the philosophy of organic and sustainable farming, which Tony Soter had introduced in 1985. Following harvest, she joined their team full time, working under guru David Abreu in the fields and Rosemary Cakebread in the winery. In 2004, with a deeper understanding of the estate vineyard, she took over as Vineyard Manager and was Spottswoode’s Winemaker from 2006 to 2011. The San Francisco Chronicle named Jennifer a "Winemaker to Watch" in 2007.

The Arrow & Branch 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of fruit from to ov the very best vineyards in the Napa Valley; Lewelling Vineyard in St. Helena and Stagecoach Vineyard in the eastern mountains overlooking the valley. Aged for 20 months in 75% new French oak, this is a dense and balanced wine from the start, exhibiting a warm, dark, brooding entry, and has aromas laced with chocolate, cinnamon, and cedar. It proudly exhibits distinct dried herbal notes characteristic of classic Cabernet, followed by flavors of plum, black cherry, and wet stone. With generous and plush tannins, it opens rich and broad across the palate and ends with a long and structured finish. With decanting this wine is immediately appealing, but patient cellaring of 10-15 years will further enhance the beauty of the remarkable wine.

Arrow & Branch proprietors (and Laguna Beach locals) Steve and Seanne Contursi share a great love for the wines of Bordeaux, particularly those produced with a large quantity of Cabernet Franc, such as Château Cheval Blanc. The couple sought out their Coombsville vineyard property with an eye to producing top-quality Cabernet Franc-based wines from Napa Valley. They bought the Arrow & Branch Vineyard in November 2007, as this vineyard was the source of Tony Soter's renowned and highly rated Little Creek Cabernet Franc. The Contursi's have maintained the organic farming and, through their work with the detail-oriented Viticulturalist Mike Wolf, are continually improving this wonderful vineyard site.

ROBERT PARKER 92-94 POINTS - "This is a new project from former Spottswoode winemaker Jennifer Williams."

"The 2012 Proprietary Red is composed of 55% Cabernet Franc, 26% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon. Elegant and fresh with raspberry as well as red and blackcurrant fruit and a floral note, it possesses medium body, sweet tannin and impressive purity. Drink it over the next 7-10 years."

ANTONIO GALLONI 91 POINTS - "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (Knights Valley), all Knights Valley fruit in this vintage, is superb. Raspberry jam, spice, scorched earth, rose petal, cloves and new leather are some of the signatures. Knights Valley is often noted for Graves-like sense of gravel-infused minerality, naturally allied to a California expression of fruit. That is exactly what readers will find in the 2013."

Sourced from sundry vineyards throughout Sonoma County, this little gem will make friends and influence people at a price that’s sure to make your pocketbook smile! This lighter-styled Cabernet proffers a juicy, versatile palate.
