One of the most respected wine producers in the world, Christian Moueix is on a personal quest for perfection in grape growing and winemaking. It is a journey that began in Bordeaux and continues today at Dominus Estate, where he has instilled his philosophy and inspired his team to share his values. To walk the vineyard with Christian is to witness a commitment to the land, a strong sense of purpose, and the modest soul of a man of the vines.
In the late 1960s, while attending the University of California at Davis, Christian Moueix fell in love with the Napa Valley and its wine. Son of Jean-Pierre Moueix, the famed wine merchant and producer from Libourne, France, Moueix returned home in 1970 to manage the family vineyards, including Chateaux Petrus. His love of Napa Valley lingered, and, in 1981, he discovered the historic Napanook Vineyard, a 124-acre site west of Yountville that had been the source of fruit for some of the finest Napa Valley wines of the 1940s and 1950s. In 1982, Moueix entered into a partnership to develop the vineyard, and in 1985, became its sole owner. He chose the name "Dominus" or "Lord of the Estate" in Latin to underscore his longstanding commitment to stewardship of the land. In fact, Dominus is now certified organically farmed.
Jeb Dunnuck scored this at 97 points, and wrote that this wine is "absolutely gorgeous, with an incredible level of purity and refinement"!
The dedication to perfection is demonstrated by the fact that Dominus decided not to release a 2022 vintage. Yes, it would have been a positive financial move to sell the wine, but they did not feel it would live up to their standards, or those of longtime Dominus drinkers and collectors. So here they are, back with the phenomenal 2023 vintage, and at a better price. The standard price on the 2023 Dominus is $269.99, but we are currently able to offer this wine for $249.99, that's a 10% savings on the regular price! 2023 truly is a noteworthy vintage in the Napa Valley, but just like a vanishing act...this wine WILL disappear!
JEB DUNNUCK 97 POINTS - "Based on 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot and aged 20 months in 40% new French oak, the 2023 Dominus is absolutely gorgeous, with an incredible level of purity and refinement. Cassis, graphite, crushed stone, melted crayons, and floral nuances all define the aromatics. It's medium to full-bodied, with seamless, refined elegance, ultra-fine tannins, beautiful mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. This more charming, forward, and seductive style of Dominus will offer incredible appeal over the next 20-25 years or more. Drink 2025-2050."
ANTONIO GALLONI 96 POINTS - "The 2023 Dominus is a very pretty, surprisingly open-knit wine from this estate. Soft contours wrap around a core of pliant red/purplish fruit. Lavender, rose petal and gently spiced overtones caress the mid-palate and finish. I expect the 2023 will drink well with minimal cellaring, something that is rarely the case here."
