Located in the Wachau's coldest zone, lies Weingut Veyder-Malberg-- an exceptionally prestigious, cult-status boutique winery in Austria. This is a newer winery compared to others, but known for producing top-tier, biodynamic Riesling and GrĂ¼ner Veltliner. Founded by Peter Veyder-Malberg, the winery is renowned for extreme, hand-cultivated, steep-terrace viticulture that produces extraordinarily pure, mineral-driven, and "awe-inspiring" wines, often defying local conventions.
Ried Hochrain is a single vineyard on terraced slopes with deep loess soils that was planted between 1987 and 1992. After being harvested across several pickings, the grapes are macerated, pressed for six to eight hours, and then let to settle in a tank for a day. After being fermented using local yeasts, they are stored in 1500L Stockinger barrels for six months. They are fined but not filtered after going through malolactic. It has a herbaceous finish, peppery spices, and a powerful golden apple and pear scent. These are excellent when they are young, but they taste even better when they have some bottle age.
