About Felipe Tosso: For Felipe Tosso, winemaking is more than a technical process; it is an act of inspiration, hard work, and an intimate connection with the land to transform grapes into a narrative of their origin. This philosophy—the belief that "the roots of the wine are in the soil"—stems from a deeply personal place: Felipe grew up immersed in Chile’s geology through the work of his father, Juan Tosso, author of Volcanic Soils of Chile. This heritage led him to become one of the most daring and respected winemakers in the contemporary scene, leading the creative vision of Ventisquero Wine Estates since 2000.
His journey toward mastery combined an impeccable technical pedigree with an inexhaustible curiosity that took him from the University of Chile to the world's most iconic regions, including Napa, Sonoma, Barossa, and Bordeaux. It was in the great estates of Saint-Émilion, such as Château Canon la Gaffelière, where he solidified his understanding of the elegance and complexity that now define his style. Following a foundational tenure at Viña Concha y Toro, where he raised the standards for Carménère in the Cachapoal Valley, Felipe took on the challenge of projecting Ventisquero into the global luxury market. In 2022, he was named Best Chilean Winemaker by Tim Atkin.
A milestone that defines both his career and his human warmth is the strategic alliance born in 2003 with legendary Australian winemaker John Duval. What began as a project to create icon wines like Pangea, Vértice, and Enclave evolved over the years into a deep friendship that continues to redefine Chile's potential on the world stage. This synergy, coupled with his pioneering spirit for exploring extreme terroirs—from the arid Atacama Desert with the Tara project to the southern limits of Patagonia with Kosten—has positioned his wines as cult objects and niche benchmarks for international critics.
Today, the industry recognizes the passion Felipe infuses into every label. He was recently honored as one of the Top 100 Winemakers in the World (2026) by The Drinks Business and named Winemaker of the Year 2026, recognition awarded along with his winemaking partner Alejandro Galaz, by the La CAV Tasting Guide. These accolades, including the Master Winemaker 2025 award and the recognition of Obliqua as the World’s Best Carmenere (2026), are the result of a tireless search for the ultimate expression of terroir. Yet, for Felipe, true success is measured by the emotion sparked by every cork pulled and the balance he finds in his family, his wife and four daughters, and simple pleasures like music, tennis, and a fine meal shared with friends
