Weingut Unterlind is the project of Heiner Bollig, who grew up in Trittenheim and became cellar master at the famed Egon Muller-Scharzhof estate in 2018, and his wife Veronika Bollig-Lintner, a sommelier who trained and worked at Egon Muller as well. Their wines are made in a "classic" Mosel Riesling style, with natural grape sweetness retained by stopping fermentation partway through, and are known for excellent balance with the delicacy expected from that style. The bottles are also distinctive - no paper label, with all the information etched directly into the glass.
The vineyard: Juffer-Sonnenuhr is a VDP.GROSSE LAGE (Grand Cru) site on the steep, south-facing slopes above Brauneberg, on weathered Devonian slate - widely considered one of the Mosel's most prestigious vineyard sites, shared with other top producers like Fritz Haag and Max Ferd. Richter.
The 2023 Spatlese is a wine of quiet intensity, starting off with a classic "tugboat" (slight petrol) nose. Hints of apricot, baby pineapple, white peach, honeysuckle, and mountain herbs gently swirl in the glass as the filigreed fragrance of this Riesling opens with a sparkle of wet slate and lime flower. It's all tension and grace on the palate: a glimmer of minerality pulses through the core, while juicy stone fruit and zesty lime unfold above laser-focused acidity. The sweetness is perfectly balanced, never decadent, and consistently elevated. It ends with a lengthy, crystalline finish that reflects its beginnings in one of Mosel's most renowned vineyards. This Riesling clocks in at 8% ABV, balanced by racy acidity, built for cellaring (10+ years) and best served chilled.
