JAMES HALLIDAY 97 POINTS - "This is stellar. The length, the breadth, the form, the immaculate rollout of tannin. It shows cherry plum, earth, violet and spice but the sum of such humble parts is so much more than that. Milk chocolate from oak simply goes with the flow. We stand in the presence of something resembling greatness."

JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS - "A seamless wine that's very refined, elegant and gently profound, this has a pristine red- and dark-fruited nose that also shows some licorice and gentle spices. Bright, fine tannins frame a juicy, long-term wine. Effortless power; this will live for a very long time. Best from 2025."

A pioneer of the Hunter Valley, today Tyrrell's still sets the benchmark for this region, producing Semillons, Chardonnays and Shirazes that are amongst the best if not the finest in the Hunter when their vineyards and the vintage align. The focus at Tyrrell's has returned to producing premium wines and the increased emphasis on quality is evident in their recent releases. While the Semillons have always been a forte with the Vat 1 Semillon being Australia's finest, it is the amazing Vat 9 Shiraz that for me that is displaying the most amazing improvement, showing wonderful purity and intensity. The 2014 Vat 9 Shiraz is a legend in the making.

Sourced from Tyrrell's super premium vineyards from very old vines (average age of 50+). An almost perfect growing season was experienced in the 2014 vintage, one of the best in recent memory. The fruit was harvested in pristine conditions and had amazing flavor. Each block was hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard before arriving at the winery. The 2014 Vat 9 has a classic earthy, savory nose, typical of great Hunter Shiraz. The palate has fantastic weight and balance with a long lingering finish, good acidity and fine tannin. A seamless wine that's very refined, elegant and gently profound, this has a pristine red- and dark-fruited nose that also shows some licorice and gentle spices. Bright, fine tannins frame a juicy, long-term wine. Effortless power; this will live for a very long time.
