Legendary actor Sam Neill passed away. He was best known for his role in Jurassic Park as Dr. Alan Grant. But, believe it or not Sam, was also a winery and vineyard owner. Where did he take up his wine endeavor? None other than New Zealand.
Although he was born in Northern Ireland, Sam grew up in New Zealand. In 1991, he purchased his first vineyard in Central Otago and then, in 1993, he founded the winery, Two Paddocks.
Two Paddocks started with a simple goal: to make Pinot Noir that’s worth sharing with friends and family. What began with one vineyard eventually grew into four certified organic vineyards across Central Otago: The First Paddock, The Last Chance, Red Bank Farm, and The Fusilier. This gives Two Paddocks a unique position as being the only Central Otago winery with vineyards in its three main valleys: Gibbston, Alexandra, and Bannockburn (respectively). And a fun fact—The Last Chance vineyard is perhaps the Earth’s southernmost vineyard.

The Two Paddocks Last Chance Pinot Noir is one of the estate’s rare single-vineyard releases, only made when the vintage is exceptional. The two-hectare vineyard sits high above the Earnscleugh Valley, rooted in raw, low-fertility schist gravels and named after a watercourse hand-dug by gold miners in the 1860s. In the cellar, the fruit is hand-picked and sorted, fermented with one-third whole bunches and native yeast, then aged for 11 months in French oak, with only 25% new barrels. The result is an elegant, driven Pinot Noir with thyme, wildflowers, red fruit, and spice, along with the length and savory character that make this site stand apart. And a fun fact—The Last Chance vineyard is perhaps the Earth’s southernmost vineyard.
