The 2021 Brunello hits are flowing in! After proving to be a favorite of the 2019 Brunello releases, SanCarlo is back with another fireworks vintage. Rest assured, SanCarlo's 2021 Brunello di Montalcino continues the winery's tradition of offering outstanding value for a wonderfully authentic taste of Montalcino!
The youthful 2021 Brunello shows the immediate appeal of the vintage, which offers a combination of 2019's layers of crunchy and silky textures with 2020's juicy, saturated fruit character. Unwinding in the glass, it gradually reveals a super-classic nose reminiscent of brambly blackberry, Morello cherry preserves, and the Mediterranean macchia: a swirl of cool sage and herbal-citrus, purple-flowered lavender, with deeper woodsy spice notes reminiscent of bay leaf and juniper berry. The medium-full weight on the palate flows gracefully with a brooding, rustic elegance; Sangiovese's distinctive, mouthwatering acidity and earthy tannins give life to the saturated concentration, infusing the wine with a softly grainy, lightly smoky and crunchy minerality that resonates with the fruit's savory, stony underpinnings.
Led by Gemma Marcucci, whose grandparents started it all, San Carlo is a traditional producer whose small strip of vineyards lies on the broad, gently-sloping hillside above the hamlet of Tavernelle (southwest of Montalcino). With neighbors like the benchmark estates of Caprili and Soldera - Case Basse, this is a special place for Brunello, with its own distinctive style.
For the best experience, give this an hour or two in the decanter, and serve around lightly cool 63F with peppercorn steak, grilled mushrooms, or wild boar ragú. We recommend getting a few extra bottles to tuck away in the wine cooler so that you can experience the glory of SanCarlo Brunello with age… a vintage like this will be great to drink for 20 years!
VINOUS 96 POINTS - "The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino bursts from the glass with a vivid blend of crushed blueberries elevated by nuances of sage and a cascade of autumnal spices. It is hauntingly dark in style with textures of pure silk and masses of ripe red and black fruits underscored by tactile mineral tones. The finish is classically structured and incredibly long, leaving black tea-like tannins to resonate while also leaving the senses salivating for more. This is a wonderfully classic interpretation of the vintage." - Eric Guido
