Owner/winemaker Ian Brand makes single vineyard, old vine bottles from some of California's most exceptional and historic vineyards. And in addition, he makes "village" inspired wines from the Central Coast that over-deliver for their respective price points.
This blend is predominantly sourced from a few vineyards at the base of Jacks' Hill on the eastern side of the Salinas Valley as close to the ocean as grapes can reliably be grown. They are planted in the orange, iron oxide granodiorite that dominates the region. Half the blend is from a 40 year old windswept vineyard that the winery thinks is Wente clone. Picked at low brix and high acid, pressed to tank, cold setled 24 hrs. The younger vines are cold fermented in tanks with arrested secondary fermentation and aged mostly in concrete. The older vines are barrel and puncheon fermented, go through malolactic fermentation and are aged on lees in the same vessels. Racked and blended after 7 months and committed to bottle.
JEB DUNNUCK 94 POINTS - "The 2023 Chardonnay Paysan Jacks' Hill is an austere, elegant, cool-climate varietal wine, with an undeniably salty, slatey character. Some of the vineyard is planted to 40-year-old vines. Oak is supportive and subtle, while the finish lingers in fresh pineapple. Drink now and over the next 5-7 years."
