Paul Hobbs is one of the true masters in the wine world. It doesn't seem to matter where he makes wine, or with what grape; anything he makes is simply fantastic! With a Masters degree in Viticulture and Enology, Paul started his winemaking career working side-by-side with Robert Mondavi, who handpicked Paul for the inaugural Opus One team. After helping to launch Opus One, Paul served as a winemaker at Simi Winery before consulting at several famed estates, including Peter Michael, Lewis Cellars, and Argentina's Bodegas Catena. Paul Hobbs produces some of the most highly-praised and consistent Pinot Noirs in Sonoma County. Sought for their complex flavors, seamless textures and long finishes, the Paul Hobbs wines tend to be fairly allocated, as only the better wine shops and restaurants can get their hands on these gems.

The West Sonoma Coast appellation is one of the newest in California and lies along a mountainous, rugged stretch of coastline characterized by a cold maritime climate that pushes the boundaries of traditional viticulture. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the West, this challenging climate yields wines beloved for their vibrant acidity, firm structure and pure fruit flavors. One of the newest sub-appellations of Sonoma, this area's distinctive wines offer a striking contrast to the soft, round wines of warmer inland regions.

ANTONIO GALLONI 96 POINTS - "Paul Hobbs’ 2021 Pinots are sensational. I tasted the wines twice, several months apart, and was blown away both times. It’s not an understatement to say everything has changed here in recent years. In the field, the focus has shifted towards cooler sites and leaving more leaf cover, while fruit is picked a bit earlier than in the past. Vinifications are much gentler, and the oak imprint, once such a signature here, has been lessened. The result is a set of Pinots that scream with purity of fruit and the essence of site. This level of quality can’t be achieved by a single person but is very clearly the work of an entire team. Bravo!"

"The 2021 Pinot Noir (West Sonoma Coast), a new wine in this range, is lights out. Rich, ample and bold, the 2021 races across palate with layers of purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and spice. A dollop of stems adds nuance, but without dominating the overall balance. There's terrific acidity and structure to play off the natural fruit richness that is such a distinctive attribute of the best sites in the appellation."

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 96 POINTS - "The 2021 Pinot Noir West Sonoma Coast is another new wine in the Paul Hobbs portfolio. It comes primarily from the Goldrock and Cleary vineyards, was vinified with 17% whole clusters and matured in 33% new oak. It has deep scents of black cherries, blueberries, violet, conifer and mossy bark. The medium-bodied palate is ripe yet crunchy, with concentrated, nuanced fruit, grainy tannins, energetic freshness and a long, earth-laced finish. It's a powerful expression that deserves 3-5 years in bottle to unwind. 976 cases were made."
