Daniel Daou explained, “Two thousand twenty-two was by far the most challenging vintage of my winemaking career. I attribute what happened to climate change—an extended heatwave that could not be predicted.” Luckily, in the case of DAOU, a producer that crops low and picks much earlier than most other properties, some varieties were nearly ready for harvest when the extreme temperatures set in. Ultimately, total production across the range was down 85% from the average. Deciding to discard such a large proportion of your grapes or juice is not easy, but the team considered their long-standing reputation to be more important than a single year's profits."
