#9 on Hi-Time's Top Italian Wines of 2025
The Mazzei family has been involved in Tuscan winemaking for centuries. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from their estate in Chianti Classico and their warmer Maremma coast property, their 'Philip' Cabernet Sauvignon from the ideal 2021 vintage really satisfies with its balance of plush fruit texture, softly grippy tannins and mouthwatering drive. It has a delicious intensity of dark-berry fruits, oak spices and cool herbs, finishing with Tuscany's classic savory tones and a clean, dry mouthfeel. What really seals the deal is the value for the price at which we're offering this!
Unlike most Italian reds, 'Philip' was aged in American oak as part of an hommage to the family's connection with the United States. Ancestor Philip Mazzei was a friend of Thomas Jefferson's throughout the formation of the nation, and inspired the line, "…all men are created equal..." in the Declaration of Independence. Practices organic farming.
JAMES SUCKLING 96 POINTS - "Cloves, dark fruit, leather and savory complexity. Youthful, velvety tannins with crisp acidity, a full body and a spicy finish full of blond tobacco and coffee grounds."
WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "Made with Cabernet Sauvignon, the Mazzei 2021 Philip is soft and richly textured with all sorts of blackberry and black fruit aromas packed inside. These come through with special intensity in this balanced vintage. The wine style is contemporary and easily accessible for an international palate."
Aged 18 months in french and american oak barrels (225 lt / 30% new).
