Tuscany's wonderful 2021 vintage imbued the Mazzei family's 'Philip' Cabernet Sauvignon with a balance of plush fruit texture, velvet tannins and mouthwatering drive. It has a delicious intensity of dark-berry fruits, spices and cool herbs, finishing with Tuscany's classic savory tones and a clean, dry mouthfeel. It's great to drink now, but has the qualities to evolve beautifully over the coming years if you like to age your wine. Unlike most Italian red, Mazzei's 'Philip' Cabernet Sauvignon was aged in American oak as part of an hommage to the family's connection with the United States. Ancestor Philip Mazzei was a friend of Thomas Jefferson's throughout the formation of the nation, and inspired the line, "All men are created equal" in the Declaration of Independence. On a more down-to-earth note, they were both wine lovers, and tried to get European vines to flourish in Virginia. Although those vines didn't survive, Philip's revolutionary contributions in both America and Italy live on!
