JAMES SCUKLING 95 POINTS - "Amazing depth and intensity to this old-vine malbec with blackberry and black-licorice character to the wine. Violets, too. It’s full and dense, yet remains energetic and long. Polished, refined tannins. A gorgeous, plush red. Drinkable now for its generosity, but let it mellow with a few years of bottle age. Better after 2024."

VINOUS 93 POINTS - "The 2019 Malbec Old Vine is a blend of grapes from La Consulta, Paraje Altamira, Pampa El Cepillo and Gualtallary, all in the Uco Valley. The 2019 was aged for 14 months in 35% new French barrels. Vivid purple in the glass. The nose is a combination of the best of the different regions. Fresh, ripe plum with hints of herb and sweet spices, violet and lavender aromas are present against a backdrop of cedar. Juicy with a velvety texture, the fine tannins are enhanced by the precise freshness. The tacky finish lingers at length. This is an elegant, voluminous wine; the 2019 is an accomplished approach to the variety. An upgrade for lovers of the Mendoza Malbec."

Laura Catena had a vision to create a new breed of Argentine wines in small quantities and artisan quality, which are true to their individual terroirs. She started by sourcing some of Argentina's best fruit from low-yielding, high elevation vineyards. State-of-the-art winemaking and oak aging (primarily French) elevate the wines to a quality level demanded by true wine connoisseurs.

Named for her oldest son, Luca was the first brand dedicated to showing the potential of Argentina’s old vines. The country has a wealth of old vineyards, but they were previously used to make bulk wine. Laura Catena persuaded several farmers to cut yields and strive for quality over quantity. The 2015 Luca Malbec is sourced from vineyards in the Uco Valley with an average age of almost 50 years. Here, the shallow alluvial soils predominate with sand, limestone and rocks of all sizes. The days are sunny while the nights are cool helping Luca achieve a richness, while remaining well-balanced.

Deep, vibrant purple with staining of the tears. Abundant aromas greet the nose with purple flowers blueberry, plum, licorice and vanilla leading the way. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied with velvety tannins. A mélange of fresh berries with blueberry, boysenberry, blackberries and plum are augmented by notions of vanilla, cocoa and baking spices. The freshness and purity of the wine is impressive carrying through to a smooth finish.
