Bodegas La Cigarrera is a small, family-run winery in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. A Barcelona-born merchant, Don Joseph Colóm Darbó, founded it in 1758. He and his son ran the business, Colom & Compañia, out of buildings leased from two monasteries. In 1891, Manuel Hidalgo Colom acquired the bodega — he was the great-grandfather of the Hidalgo Garcia de Velasco brothers who lead the company today (also cousins of César Florido). It was Manuel who launched the now well-regarded Manzanilla La Cigarrera.

Because of the Consejo Regulador's older rules requiring minimum stock levels, the firm long operated as an almacenista — a stockholder supplying wine to larger shipping houses, Lustau included — rather than bottling under its own label. That changed in 1997, when it began bottling its own wines. Production today runs to roughly 11,000 cases of Manzanilla La Cigarrera a year, a name that honors the women who once sold cigarettes on the streets of Cádiz and Seville on behalf of the major tobacco factories there.

Although the operation has since brought several properties together, it still works out of its original bodegas on the Plaza Madre de Dios in Sanlúcar's Barrio Bajo. The site spans about 1,637 square meters and houses some 500 casks, among the oldest in town, held within three naves — Bodega de Colóm, Bodega de Cabral, and Bodega de Samilla — arranged around a striking central Andalusian courtyard. The family once maintained its own vineyards too, but today buys its sobretablas from local growers instead.
