ORANGE WINE

JAMES SUCKLING 96 POINTS - "Gorgeous aromas of persimmons and spices as nutmeg, cinnamon, orange peel, and hints of caramel. Honey and apricot. Full-bodied, dry and layered with dried fruits such as apricots and pears. Botrytis spice. Fine silky phenolic texture and a flavorful finish. Layered and fascinating. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees centigrade [~60-64F]. Drink or hold."

"Gravner’s legendary wine – the most sought-after skin-contact wine of Italy – is released seven years after the vintage. It's the result of the scrupulous, unconventional work of Josko, from the vineyard to the cellar, that makes the 2015 vintage a deep, golden wine with amber hue. Its intriguing nose is rich in aromatic components like dried apricot, orange peel and resin notes. Mouthfilling with great texture and delicate tannins, it shows lovely acidity with a sapid, mineral finish." - DECANTER MAGAZINE

This famous wine was pioneering in taking seriously -and raising the bar- for traditional Friulian (and further back, what is now the Republic of Georgia) winemaking wherein 'white' grapes are fermented and rested on the skins for an extended period. It's structured like a red wine, but with the exotic aromas from the Ribolla Gialla skins, and long slowly oxidative ageing in oak vats. It's a wine of minimal intervention, so tartrate crystals can appear over time in bottle. This is a wine that will age further, becoming even more wild in flavor.

"Exclusively composed of the local Ribolla grape; fermented in Georgian amphorae buried underground; long maceration with wild yeasts and no temperature control; after fermentation, the wine rests again in amphorae for five more months and then is aged in large oak barrels for an additional six years; bottled without fining or filtering. This is a deeply personal creation of Joško Gravner that captures the essence of Ribolla in a way no other versions do—notes of white truffles and quince paste frame a strikingly mineral-led aromatic profile, with a kinetic sense of acidity and chiseled energy on the palate; gorgeous right now it will undoubtedly reveal its secrets gradually over the years to come." - WINERY NOTES
