Bill Wathen and Dick Dore have been making wine together since 1985, when they founded Foxen Vineyards and Winery at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in Northern Santa Barbara County. Since that time, their dedication has remained the same: the creation of small production, sustainably-farmed, vineyard-focused wines using a straightforward and minimalist approach to winemaking. Today's offer is under their Foxen 7200 label, a line-up of wines that focus on Bordeaux or Italian varietals. These wines typically are not distributed, but reserved for members of their wine club and those who visit their tasting room. The "El Potreros" (or pasture in Spanish) name on the label pays homage to the history of the Foxen property, which was originally part of a historic 1837 Mexican land grant named Rancho Tinaquaic. Before it became a modern vineyard, the valley floor and rolling hills of Foxen Canyon were used as sprawling ranch lands and horse pastures by the winery's early ancestors.
This Cabernet comes from two prominent vineyards (one sustainably farmed and the other organically-farmed) in the far eastern reaches of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA; an area known as Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara. Happy Canyon welcomes visitors with stunning views of its valley framed by the picturesque scenery of the San Rafael Mountains. This region sits farther inland, enjoying a warmer climate-ideal for ripening late-season grape varieties. Its gently rolling hills, elevated slopes, and diverse soils make it especially well-suited for Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon.
