The latest Exceptional Cask Selection release (ECS Mark XVII), Equidem translates to "Truly" and this truly is an exceptional rum. Truth is sometimes hard to find in the world of spirits with the shenanigans that go on at times in how some folks make and market their distillates. Master Blender Richard Seale insists on truth in his rums and, regardless of the many well-deserved kudos and awards Foursquare has received (and it is EXTENSIVE!), the proof is in the bottle and has been since ECS I. Equidem was aged for 5 Years in Ex-Bourbon Barrels, and then tranferred into Ex-Black Muscat Casks for an additional 9 Years. Which is one of the (many) reasons why we love these rums-- the variety of barrels! But enjoy this one first, while we still have it. And remember: No color, no sugar, no filtration, no flavor additives; distilled, matured, blended and bottled in Barbados.
Tasting Notes:
The nose exudes vanilla and orange peel leading into sweet mandarines and tangerines with finishing touches of herbaceous and baking spices. The palate is bold, complex! But also round and pleasant. Savory notes (similar to miso, or salted caramel, with hints of enoki mushroom, leather, cedar and honey notes on the finish) are built around a base of brown butter, rich toffee and emanations of both berry and citrus fruits. This is perfect neat or with a drop or two of spring water.
