We've got an exceptional value for fans of Tuscany's savory reds, whose expressive perfumes are at once warm-toned, brooding and vibrant. Fattoria Le Pupille's 2021 Morellino di Scansano is a testament to a wonderful vintage and the fresh, evolving approach to their house style.
Morellino is the local type of Sangiovese that adapted to the large swath of hills surrounding the town of Scansano in Tuscany's coastal Maremma region. To this, Le Pupille's Riserva is given a complementary dash of Cabernet Sauvignon. While winemaking has been going on here for over 2,000 years, the area has only been recognized officially since the 1970s. Fattoria Le Pupille's guide onto the international wine stage was Elisabetta Geppetti, and today her winemaker son, Ettore, is seeking to bring more finesse and freshness to their typically powerful and slightly rustic Morellinos.
In the 2021 Riserva, you'll find a dense array of brooding and lifting aromas. Classic accents like cool bay laurel and warm tobacco, leather & sunbaked earth join a core of vivid fruit notes like black cherry, plum & floral blackberry, all sprinkled with comforting spices like clove, anise & vanilla. The wine is structured with vibrant acidity and a fine-knit grip of tannin, framing and driving it from start to finish in impressively even-keeled fashion. It leaves you with a mouthwatering, saline-like freshness and echoes of that aromatic mélange. With its combination of bold, rustic tones and fresh, fragrant core, this wine feels at home amongst the scrub and oak-covered hills, awash in the breeze from the Mediterranean Sea. This being his home, it's exactly what winemaker Ettore Rizzi intended.
WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "A tiny percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon has been added to this Sangiovese-based wine. The Fattoria le Pupille 2021 Morellino di Scansano Riserva shows an impressive level of fruit clarity with lots of freshness and a tightly knit, medium-plus mouthfeel. This is classic Morellino executed by some of the most talented winemakers on the Tuscan Coast. You get unbelievable value with this bottle."
