We've been touting Oregon's 2023 vintage since the very first released rolled in here, and another beauty has landed. The Pinot Noirs from this vintage show substantial complexity, nuance, and flavors with a heightened element of brightness. Failla is one of those producers who have quickly become a reference point in the region, and their latest release has earned a wonderful 93 points from Antonio Galloni!
Ehren Jordan excels at something that an exceptionally small amount of winemakers can claim; he can not only produce huge, ripe, rich red wines, but also elegant and complex Chards and Pinot Noirs that show precision and finesse. Yes, while Ehren was working at Turley Cellars making big bold reds from warm climates, he would also work on his Failla line of wines, which originate from cool, heavily maritime-influenced vineyards along California's coast. In 2016, Ehren and his team leaped into Willamette Valley winemaking, and these offerings have become some of our staff's favorite wines to drink from Oregon!
The grapes in Failla's Willamette Valley Pinot Noir hail from four impeccable vineyards of the Northern Willamette Valley: Amity Hills, Seven Springs, Björnson and Eola Springs. The vineyards range in diverse terroir as well as ideal mature vines to add layers of complexity. In addition, most of the vineyards that Failla works with are either sustainably or organically farmed. Fermentation occurs through native yeast and 25% is whole cluster. The wines age for 14 months sur lie in 10% new French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
There are no big marketing dollars behind this family venture. Their success comes from their hard work, determination to bottle only the best wines they can, and by word of mouth. Speaking to that, we cannot tell you how many times we've had customers come in to buy the Failla Pinot Noirs, and recommend the wines to other customers! In our buyer's opinion, Failla represents a true example of American Pinot Noir that emulates the bright, fresh, and vibrant styles of Burgundy. But don't just take our word for it; respected critic Antonio Galloni recently rated this wine at 93 points! He calls it "a gorgeous and very serious appellation-level wine".
If you enjoy classic, traditionally-styled Pinot Noirs from California and Oregon, then this is a wine that should be on your radar!
ANTONIO GALLONI 93 POINTS - "The 2023 Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley) is a gorgeous and very serious appellation-level wine. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, white pepper, blood orange, mint, chalk and slate all meld together in this gracious, silky Pinot. What a beauty."
