The Lecinquevigne Barolo from the historic Damilano estate is a fantastic ambassador for the storied Piedmontese wine region, and absolutely one of the best values in the region. It comes from the beautiful 2019 growing season, which came to a graceful end in the cooler days of mid-October. Mouth-filling and vibrant, elegant and approachable, it has subtle depth and a soft, rounded character that's sure to please many palates!

Damilano goes back to 1890 when Giuseppe Borgogno, great-grandfather of the current owners, started bottling his own wine from around the town of Barolo itself. The name Lecinquevigne is a mashup that means "the five vineyards," referring to the combination of top sites used for the bottling: Brunate, Liste, Cerequio, Cannubi, and Raviole.

With time in the glass or decanter, the aromas emerge and evolve: a rounded profile led by red and black cherry coulis, flowers such as rose and violet, a clay earthiness (like kaolin), and balsam (particularly camphor). Well-meshed, subtle baking spice hints in the background (clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla) come in part from the two years of aging in large oak barrels. The palate features a rounded, broad mouthfeel, with an inner vibrant acidity, lifting the wine toward a juicy finish, where earthy, fruity and savory notes linger harmoniously. The wine's savory-tinged fruit and tannic structure fill and softly coat the mouth, leading to an appetizing, sapid counterpoint.

This is a 21st century wine: sleek, lightly polished and already well-balanced, while maintaining a delicious sense of purity in its expression of textbook, structured Barolo. Just give it some time to open up in the glass, and it'll shine with dishes like risotto al Barolo! It's also a great bottle to age for several more years if you're so inclined.

DECANTER WORLD WINE, BEST IN SHOW 97 POINTS - "...a wine of gentleness and refinement, with bright plum fruits and warm spice both apparent in the aromas, within the context of an aromatic profile both seamless and harmonious. It's ample in the palate yet round-contoured, with acidity here as important an element of the wine's structure as is tannin. The tannins, indeed, are unintimidating and supportive - but resonant and flavoury, too, in best Barolo style. The overall impression of an easy-rolling roundness is underscored by the wealth of fruit which sings through the palate. For all that, this is a serious Barolo which could easily take five to ten years' further ageing: an ideal introduction to the pleasures of the 2019 vintage in this emblematic Piedmontese region."
