We have an outstanding value from Spain for lovers of bold, fruit-driven reds that finish mouthwateringly clean and dry. Bodegas Breca creates a line of rich Garnachas, but their humbly-priced, "everyday" 2022 El Nacido Garnacha stands above countless wines that cost the same or more. It's seriously delicious!
Coming from Jorge Ordonez, it's not too surprising that the wine is this good for the price! Over the years, he's become famous for creating wineries around old vineyards in regions that had been overlooked, then creating a lineup of wines that offer high quality at a range of price levels. The over-achieving character of the El Nacido Garnacha starts with the estate's "younger" 40 to 60-year-old, non-irrigated, organically-farmed vines, which struggle to grow their small crop in the rocky soils of the inland Mediterranean region of Calatayud. This is considered to be the homeland of Garnacha, from which it spread all over the Mediterranean rim and abroad. Here, the dry, sunny days give way to cold nights, making for concentrated, ripely-toned wines that still have a mouthwatering freshness that keeps you coming back for another sip!
The 2022 El Nacido Ganacha has a warm and energetic demeanor, with a bright and glossy core of red- and blue-fruit reduction (cherry, red plum, boysenberry) infused with fragrant, cool-toned herbs like sage or lavender, pungent spices reminiscent of tobacco leaf and peppercorn, and sweeter spices like anise and vanilla. The core aromas and flavors are framed by the soft-toned floral lift of violet and subtle grounding stoniness at its core. It combines a suave and viscous mouthfeel with an inner brightness that creates an energetic flow. The dry-but-fruity finish shows off a delicious harmony between the mouthcoating flavors and sleek tannins, between the cooling sensations and warming 15% abv. This is a must-try at your next get-together with Mediterranean platters, Spanish-inspired tapas, burgers and grilled veggies! Serve at a lightly cool 58-60F.
JEB DUNNUCK 94 POINTS - "The 2022 Breca El Nacido comes from higher elevation vineyards and is just about all Garnacha, co-fermented with a kiss of white varieties, that's raised in a mix of tank and barrel. Ripe black cherries, black raspberries, peppery herbs, crushed stone, and violet notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a rare mix of richness and freshness."
