Located in the Côte des Bar, Bertrand Gautherot's estate is named after two of his lieudits: Vouette & Sorbée. Unlike the vineyards in the north of Champagne, with their fine chalky soils, the Côte des Bar is more like Chablis - dense, rocky, Kimmeridgian, and Portlandian limestone clay soils. Inspired by friends Jérôme Prévost and Pierre Larmandier, Bertrand converted his vineyards to biodynamics in the 1990's and received certification from Demeter in 1998. He released his first Champagne in 2001. Here, nothing is chaptalized, filtered, or acidified. There are no cold macerations, and only a small amount of SO2 is added right after the grapes are pressed. "Fidèle" is a 100% Pinot Noir Champagne mainly from the lieux-dits of Fonnet and Briaunes with additional Pinot from the other parcels Bertrand farms. Fermented in oak, followed by 20 months aging sur latte, and then finished without any dosage. It displays a deep color, distinct red fruits on the nose while the palate is forward and lush for a brut nature. In short, it is vinous, lively and dangerously tasty.
