The Virgen del Galir winery was founded in 2002 in a valley of the Galir river, in Éntoma, a small village in Orense, Galicia, Northern Spain. The "Camino de Santiago" crosses through this village. Virgen del Galir is a member of the Valdeorras DO. Owned by Grupo CVNE, this winery continues to excel with their investments and is particularly noted for their Godello wines.
Godello is a fascinating grape that can make wines of incredible complexity, beautiful structure and excellent olfactory sensations. This 2024 (good year!) version from Virgen del Galir offers a lot for the sub-$19 price-- this is a quality wine with depth of flavor and scent that is also very user-friendly and will be a perfect summertime quaffer. The nose is filled with spring flowers, orchard fruits (white peach!), mountain stream and stony minerality. In the mouth, the wine is quite lush but bolstered and kept focused with fine acidity that arises mid-palate. Stone fruits are reiterated on the palate with peach again in the foreground and notes of wildflowers, pear, a touch of spice, river rock minerality and appropriate body to keep the wine aloft on the mouth and not cloying. Great with summer fare (chicken and fish, salads, tofu, cheeses, etc.) but quite nice all on its own, as well!
WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The 2024 Val do Galir A Malosa Godello was produced with Godello from their 21-hectare A Malosa vineyard in the village of Éntoma in the Galir Valley, where they have different expositions, altitudes (400 to 600 meters) and slate and schist soils. It fermented in stainless steel vats, oak foudres and 500- and 600-liter barrels and matured in the foudres and barrels for seven months. They want to go beyond the yellow apple notes in the Godello, and it's pale, clean and precise. Like all 2024s, it's very young but harmonious with some herbaceousness. It has good ripeness, 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.0 and 7.2 grams of acidity and a chalky texture. It's serious and elegant. 25,000 bottles and 300 magnums produced. It was bottled in April 2025."
VINOUS 93 POINTS - "Located in Entoma, Valdeorras, and owned by Grupo CVNE, Virgen del Galir focuses on Godello from two vineyards, one in O Bolo and another in Entoma. Winemakers Miguel Tienda and Jorge Navascués pursue a clean, terroir-driven style that brings out Godello’s floral nuances. Their reds, Mencía-based blends with other native varieties, are fruit-forward and primary. These are consistently well-made wines across the board." -Joaquin Hidaldo
