With their easy-going character of supple fruit texture and mellow inner vibrancy, Montepulcianos are some of Italy's most popular reds. The most famous come from the strip of land between mountains and sea in Italy's bucolic Abruzzo region, like this one from the hills of Chieti. This single-vineyard bottling takes you beyond the masses, offering a fantastic value for a real taste of Italy made in a traditional way.

Unlike the average Montepulciano producer out there today, the family-run Torre Zambra winery farms organically and lets their juice ferment naturally, without added yeast, giving the local character a chance to shine. Mouth-filling, generously flavored, and classically dry, it's aged for a brief 6 months in oak, giving it woodsy (cedar, pine) and spicy (clove, star anise) aromatic accents, along with more depth and richness than you find in the simple-and-fruity styles out there. This crowd-pleaser is a no-brainer for get-togethers or casual dinners at home, whether with cured meats and cheeses, hearty grilled & roasted Mediterranean dishes, or a deep-dish sausage pizza. Buon appetito!

VINOUS 92 POINTS - "The 2024 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colle Maggio opens with a woodsy bouquet of dried herbs, pine shavings, flowery undergrowth and dried black cherries. Nuances of clove and spiced blood orange complicate ripe red berry fruits. The 2024 leaves edgy tannins, a bump of vibrant acidity and a licorice tinge. Very nice." - Eric Guido
