PRACTICING ORGANIC/BIODYNAMIC FARMING
100% Sangiovese
This super-high altitude Sangiovese (for the Chianti hills, at least) shows off the lean, fresh and mineral style of the Lamole district. Using old-fashioned techniques with a modern understanding of wine science, this is the winemaker's most iconoclastic bottling.
"In 2023 Il Guercio was entirely made from a single vineyard in Lamole. Foot-trodden, then fermented with native yeasts in cement vats, with 50% whole clusters. 4 months of maceration bring the fruit profile to a whole different dimension. Aged in cement for 12 months. 'Il Guercio' is a defining wine for Sean O’Callaghan, his very own interpretation of this quintessential Tuscan grape. Stunningly delicious, with layers of juicy fruit seamlessly woven together by a mineral note of crushed stones."
JANCIS ROBINSON 17++ - "A creation of winemaker Sean O’Callaghan, called after himself, ‘the one-eyed rascal’. 100% late-picked Sangiovese. 40% whole-bunch, 5–6 months on skins. 12 months in concrete. O’Callaghan sees this as a low-SO2 experiment. Transparent garnet. Sweet, round and fresh. Dry finish. Grating texture on the end. Needs time..." - Jancis Robinson
