When it was released Robert Parker scored this Smith Woodhouse 90 Points and opined that it could well be the sleeper of the vintage. Well it looks like Bob knew what he was talking about as this Port has developed into a real jewel. After nearly a quarter century in the bottle it has attained its apogee as it showcases seamless flavor integration along with consummate delicacy and polish. In the glass this '85 displays a medium ruby-red center and a pale garnet rim, while the bouquet reveals fragrances of dried cherries, sultanas, and figs along with some cigar box notes. Medium-full bodied with a velvety mouthfeel, this Port proffers abundantly rich flavors of red berry compote, caramel, and carob backed with just a hint of grip and spice in the finish. A perfect example of the dividends that are reaped by the long term aging of a properly constituted Vintage Port.
ROBERT PARKER 90 POINTS - "My experience with Smith-Woodhouse is limited. Is the 1985 the sleeper of the vintage? An astonishing amount of creamy, black-cherry and chocolate-scented fruit fills the nose. On the palate, this full-bodied wine is loaded with extract, great length, and has super finish with plenty of fruit and tannin in proper balance."
