JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS - "Complex and open already, with aromas of slate, dried rosemary, grilled sage, lemon peel, sour cherries and cardamom. Supple and full-bodied with sleek and fine tannins. I like the olive-stone and herbal undertones. Firmer, mineral finish. Try after 2025."

Founded back in 1972 just east of the town itself, San Filippo was among the early estates in the association of Brunello producers that helped shape the modern wine region. However, the estate's current renown is due to the efforts of Roberto Gianelli, who knew very little about winemaking when he purchased it in 2003. Thanks to the help of well-seasoned winemaker friends, he made the small estate the powerhouse it is today.

Proving the greatness of their special vineyard, "Le Lucere," it is here that the Sangiovese character is more concentrated, yet elegant and 'focused' in its power, and driven by its bed of fine, firm tannins. Aged 24-28 months in a mix of large barrels and smaller French barriques.
