August 1588. The Grande y Felicísima Armada falls prey to its own icy arrogance and to the Atlantic in the shape of storms in the English Channel along with Drake’s cannons and his Corsairs. Nothing doing: the ancient Spanish power is helpless faced with the Elisabeth’s young exuberant England told through Shakespeare, Marlowe, Ben Johnson; forged through wars across seas and taking the shape of an empire which is to last for centuries. This is a milestone of history. It is still marked by the wrecks of Spanish vessels resting on the seabed off the shores of Islay for 435 years. Yet what a metaphor for this great and certainly victorious batch of Scottish descent which has been contending with the wood from Spanish barrels originating from Jerez! Today, this feels ready and mature to be tested and become a protagonist in its - our - world. How? Initially, by conferring to the nose a strong emotional arpeggio of brine and iodine dissipating like the fog in the Channel on a summer morning. Later, the consummate sweetened note of sherry oak is revealed. Now the mouth is imposing, almost laden to excess - yes, bring on the Spanish galleons, the broadsides and the boardings of the English ships and their wild crews! Then, stimulated by the passing of time in the glass, strong and definitive sensations of medicinal herbs, seafood, wet sand and woodland mushrooms. As we said: our Scots always win. But be assured, the Spanish woods will give in, yet with honour.
