Weingut Rudolf Furst is OBSESSED with French Burgundy, and they reflect that sensibility in their wines. The soil here is red sandstone. This juicer, darker Pinot Noir alternative is playful, but well-executed and balanced all the way, in proper Furst fashion as only they would do. Berries are cold-soaked and the wine is matured in small wooden barrels. It is still just a baby and tastes of wild berries and cocoa, and will be fun to see this evolve in a few years.
The 2019 Parzival is made from both Zweigelt and Domina varieties. Zweigelt is a crossing between St. Laurent and Blaufrankisch, The variety was developed in 1922 by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt. Furst's prized Centgrafenberg vineyard is located near the Wildenberg Castle, where Wolfram von Eschenbach wrote "Parzival" (or Percival) over 800 years ago. The poem, commonly dated to the first quarter of the 13th century, centers on the Arthurian hero Parzival and his long quest for the Holy Grail. The Rudolf Furst winery is in Franken, which is in Bavaria, and surrounded by the neighboring cities of Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Nuremberg.
