Malvasia de Colares & Arinto
Janas is an area that lies within the Lisboa wine region. Plantings for the Quinta de San Michel started in 2013 in clay and limestone, at around 200 meters altitude between the Sintra Mountains and the Atlantic. The 'Malvarinto' is a combination of the Malvasia de Colares and Arinto varieties, which bring both "muscle and lift" according to the winemaker. It ages for 9-10 months on the lees in ~3-year-old, 225-liter French oak barrels, of which 15-20% is new..."just enough to sculpt and frame without intrusion."
The Malvoasia de Colares component of the wine is "marked by sharp acidity, salinity and waxy texture with occasional complexing oxidative tones as they age, and its aromas are enchanting—more effusive than stoic." Arinto forms a solid backbone for a lot of Lisboa whites, with its bright acidity and square-shouldered mouthfeel, along with subtle stone fruit flavors. The result in the 'Malvarinto' is a moderately rich weight, lightly warming with subtle grip and mouthwatering sapidity, finishing in almost-unctuous fashion.
