The Pinea winery, named for a grand, old stone pine tree that stands proudly on the property, was founded by long-time friends who wanted to make an imprint on their favorite wine region. The estate's old Tempranillo vineyards and location in the Ribera del Duero's high-altitude north made it an ideal place in which to do that. The "17" bottling was created as a "2nd label," named to commemorate the 2017 vintage as their debut on the international stage.

The impressive 2021 edition displays an exciting contrast of chewy, dusty-mineral tannins and full-bodied, velvet fruit texture. Warm balsam and spice aromas are out front and mingling with its clear and concentrated fruit character. This is all thanks to the dramatic continental climate of the Duero River region, a careful fermentation that preserves aromatic qualities, and aging in high-quality oak barrels (along with some fashionable clay vessels). This is a new winery to watch! Practices organic and biodynamic farming.

JEB DUNNUCK 96 POINTS - "A youthful, memorable exploration of 100% Tempranillo made in a refined and modern style, the 2021 Tempranillo 17 by Pinea opens in a wealth of silky tannins and rounded red berry fruit. Fantastic acidity complements its power, complexity, and length to result in something remarkably sophisticated, with well-etched characteristics of oak spice, vanilla, cacao nib, and balsamic. The fruit is all blackberries. There’s no doubt a good amount of concentration in the wine, yet it feels weightless on the palate. Extremely impressive, it should age with ease another 15-20 years."
