"If there is one estate that embodies the potential of Carmignano, Piaggia just might be it." - Antonio Galloni, VINOUS MEDIA

VINOUS 94 POINTS - "Dusty, floral and perfumed, the 2022 Carmignano Il Sasso lifts from the glass with a lovely blend of rose petals, incense, lavender pastille and dried currants. The longer it sits in the glass, the more aromatic complexity it gains. It's silky smooth and elegant in style with a slight peppery tinge that adds depth as ripe wild berry fruits slowly saturate throughout. This finishes with tremendous depth and length, punching well above its class as fine-grained tannins add a lovely framework and hints of licorice resonate." - Eric Guido

If there's one thing you need to know about Piaggia, it's that it's from the one-and-only Mauro Vannuci. One of the most passionate people in Italian wine, this is a guy that when he does something, he really pulls out all the stops.

His first oenologist was Alberto Antonini (one of true legends in Tuscan wine), and he hired agronomist Federico Curtaz (of Angelo Gaja fame) to manage his vineyards. After a time, he put his faith in a young student of Anonini's, the immensely talented Emiliano Falsini. In other words, there is no better team in Italian wine.

Piaggia is located right in the heart of Carmignano, and Il Sasso is from the cru of Santa Cristina in Mezzana at 250 meters above sea level. This outstanding site is farmed organically and planted with Sangiovese, Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, and Merlot. It's fermented with indigenous yeasts and macerated on the skins in small, 40-50 hectoliter tanks for three weeks, followed by aging in used French oak for 15 months and six months in bottle.

We don't need to add much to the remarkable words already written by the eminent critics above, but we think this wine is an absolute heartbreaker, and for just cents on the dollar when compared to Tuscany's more famous "-aias" and "Super Tuscans," an unbelievable bargain!

Piaggia is a practicing organic winery. Integrated insect and disease control is followed. Organic fertilizers, copper and sulphur-based products are mainly used, but the vineyards see no insecticides or herbicides.
