Previously named "Royale Reserve", Champagne Philipponnat renamed the wine to "Reserve Perpetuelle" to more accurately portray the wine. This new name reflects the true nature of the blend and how they manage their reserve wines. This current release is based off the 2020 Vintage with a blending cycle that has been renewed year after year since 1946! In other words, every release combines bright, current-harvest energy with older reserve wines that bring depth, texture, and a richer Champagne as time passes.
The grapes from the 2020 Vintage come from the heart of Champagne, mostly from the Grand and Premier Crus around Mareuil-sur-Ay. Traditionally vinified in vats and wooden barrels to prevent premature oxidation, this cuvee is enhanced with cask-aged reserve wines from previous vintages. This includes a portion made without malolactic fermentation, adding depth and complexity while preserving its freshness and mineral edge.
Champagne Philipponnat ages this cuvee for a minimum of three years in their cellars, much longer than the legal minimum of fifteen months for non-vintage Champagnes! This cuvee is given a moderate dosage of 8g/L to help "maintain the balance between freshness, fruitiness, and vinosity without masking the wine's character or purity." Our Champagne buyer Todd, was surprised with the dosage since the Champagne possesses so much precision and energy!
When tasting the Champagne what you'll notice immediately is the unique style: Pinot Noir takes the lead here, giving the wine real structure and character. All without sacrificing finesse. The nose moves from delicate flowers and toasted bread into red berries and citrus, and on the palate it's full-bodied and beautifully persistent, finishing with a savory, bready complexity that keeps you coming back for another sip. In other words, "Ooh, that is good!"
This isn't a "special occasion only" bottle. It's the Champagne you open for: roast chicken, seafood, and crudo; charcuterie and salty appetizers; sushi nights and "we're cooking something good" dinners. And yes-celebrations, because it delivers in a big way.
Serve this at your Easter brunch and we will guarantee that you wish you bought more!
DECANTER 94 POINTS - "A distinctly red-berry nose – all red currants and small forest fruit. Red Delicious apple has such a telltale Pinot scent. The palate has pure, bright apple fruit, a lemony verve, and a very delicate mousse backed by gently salty autolysis. Vanilla oak comes through, like the custard on an apple crumble, carrying freshness and flavour until the lingering finish."
JAMES SUCKLING 93 POINTS - "Complex and smoky nose with orange blossom, green apple, licorice, chalky minerality and toasted bread. Refined palate with pinprick mousse, crisp acidity and a tight, tense and clean aftertaste."
