Brothers Orlando and Attilio Pecchenino are fourth generation vintners who have catapulted their small family winery to international stardom. The core of their winery is simple and true—excellent hillside vineyards, organic farming, and a polished, succulent style of winemaking. The Peccheninos have long been famous for the Dolcetto grape, but their Barolo is relatively new as the family slowly acquired holdings a few miles north of their home in Dogliani and made their first Barolo bottling in 2005. The Pecchenino Barolos got our attention early on and we’ve carried most vintages, but the 2013 "San Guiseppe" is probably the best Pecchenino Barolo we've had yet. Wildly exuberant on the nose with dried cherry, rose petal, black tea and blood orange, this wine is dense and layered on the palate, with red currant, white pepper, and violet. Rich with earthy notes of dried tobacco leaf, morel, and sage, this wine is surprisingly supple for being so young, leaving a velvety impression through the lengthy finish. We poured the 2013 "San Guiseppe" at an event last month with Master Sommelier Peter Neptune and have been wanting more ever since! It's finally here!
JAMES SUCKLING 96 POINTS - "The aromas to this are so beautiful with ripe strawberry, dried lemon and flowers. Full body, dense palate of lots of ripe fruit and a long and flavorful finish. A top wine for the vintage. Drink in 2021."
WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "This evokes aromas of mint, menthol and cherry, picking up leather and tobacco flavors toward the finish. Firmly structured, yet long and athletic. Best from 2021 through 2038."
