With a garnet hue, this single-vineyard Etna red shows the subtle smoky hints and aromatic lift that signal the great sites on the volcano. Savory dark fruits and a dusty, earthy veil over herbs, flowers and spice give this a feeling of place, but winemaking has given the wine elegance and polished edges to tame rusticity. The surprisingly delicate, finessed finish completes the picture: a combination of good terroir and thoughtful winemaking. Grilled lamb or porkchops, with rosemary and mint, would make a great partner. make them shish kebobs with charred tomato and bell peppers, and you might have magic.

"The organic Palmento Costanzo 2019 Etna Rosso Contrada Santo Spirito is almost all Nerello Mascalese with a tiny 10% of Nerello Cappuccio. This wine shows nice richness and softness that comes in the form of black cherry and blackberry. The 2019 vintage to my mind always offers extra concentration, and this quality comes through clearly in this wine. Fruit is harvested at 720 to 780 meters above sea level in a picturesque vineyard with tightly spaced chestnut wood poles that make for a beautiful landscape. This wine sees a very special aging process in precious French oak Ovum (an egg-shaped oak vessel) for 24 months. " - Monica Larner, WINE ADVOCATE

JANCIS ROBINSON 17+ - "Tight and muscular. Balsamic notes, tomato and tomato vines. Zero fat on this Ironman wine which is all about spine and long, fine-tine mineral line. Sparse, elegant, herbal and ever so slightly smoky. The tannins have a sinewed, chewy, street-dancer control and defiance. Skinny and spitting salty rocks and yet impossible to put down." - Tamlyn Currin
