This is part of the Rioja renaissance: old vines (going back to the 1940s), fermentation in old-school large French oak vats and modern-day concrete eggs, native yeasts... this is not your old-fashioned "creamy coconut" Rioja! In fact, it's a style that does go back in the traditions here, and its more like making Burgundy than Bordeaux.
Ahari has the long, sleek character that distinguishes Rioja Alavesa and its high-altitude, limestone-rich vineyards. Oxer's wines have a rugged purity to them, with generous, juicy tones at the core, and velvety, rustic tannins that softly grip the cheeks. You might find blue and dark-red fruits (lifted blueberry, juicy plum, fleshy black cherry), herbal accents like thyme, and a floral accent like violet. Ahari is a hearty and delicious Rioja that calls out for grilled fare! To let it show its best, we suggest aerating in a decanter for half an hour or so.
Ahari refers to a mischievous spirit or elf from Basque mythology who scares children at night, just for fun. The depiction of Ahari on the wine's label is an homage to the cubist style found in Picasso's famous painting, 'Guernica.'
