A salted licorice liqueur from Ölgerðin Egill Skallagrímsson of Reykjavik — Iceland's oldest beverage producer, founded April 17, 1913, and today producing some 45 million liters of beverages annually. Named for the iconic Opal pastilles of candy maker Nói Síríus — the black salted-licorice pastilles with menthol and salmiak that Icelanders have loved for generations — the liqueur captures that same flavor: strong salted licorice with salmiak (ammonium chloride), herbal notes of caraway and dill, and accents of menthol and eucalyptus, on a fermented potato mash base. A favorite in Iceland since the 1940s.
Palate: Intensely salty-sweet licorice — savory, herbal, and unmistakably Nordic.
Serve: Ice-cold as a shot, or over ice for the full Icelandic experience.
