This is a cult favorite by producer Ohmine (this Sake is on the fruitier side), and sold out quickly last year. The Ohmine brewery is located in Yamaguchi Prefecture, the southern portion of Japan, about two hours south of Kyoto by train.
This limited, seasonal bottle from Ohmine, expresses all the joys of summer. It is light and wispy with a gentle aroma. On the palate are notes of cherry, grape, passionfruit, muscat and nectarine. The feel is vivid and delicate, the finish is pleasantly sweet, yet elegant and beautifully balanced.
The rice variety used in this sake is Yamada Nishiki, which is polished down to 50% of the rice grain remaining, thereby making it a Daiginjo. Alcohol percentage is 13%.
Ohmine Shuzo (Brewery) was founded in 1822 in Mine City, Yamaguchi, and operated until 1955, when it ceased production and remained dormant for over 50 years. Operations resumed in 2010 after a 50-year hiatus, the brewery was revived by Takeshi Akiyama, who returned to his hometown with a vision to restart sake production and support the local rice farming community. In 2020, the singer/entertainer Pharrell Williams and designer/record producer Nigo became owners of the brewery, which might explain the brewery’s modern and fun new look. Designed by artist Misaki Tanaka, the label for “Summer's Arrival” is a heart-fluttering, whimsical illustration of a beautiful mermaid holding underwater goggles and a snorkel, evoking a feeling of playfulness and evoking the fleetingness of summer.

RICE VARIETY: Yamada Nishiki
